Met Eireann, Ireland’s meteorological services, are predicting that temperatures could drop as low as 14F (-10C) over the next few days.

The group has said that country is set to move “into a very cold, wintry spell with an arctic airmass,” from Wednesday and will last through the weekend.

The ten-day model “gives no indication of any mild weather before the second of December”.

It is expected that there will be severe night frosts with sub-zero air temperatures. Temperatures are expected to fall to between -5 (23F) and -10 C (14F). There’s also warnings of freezing fog.

Daytime temperature will reach about 5C (41F) but could be as low as 1C(34F) or 2C (36F) during next week.

Met Éireann forecaster Vincent O’Shea said “It will be a case of it getting progressively colder as we go through the week…It could get even colder at the weekend, according to our computer models.”

He said that he situation is likely to be like the “Big Freeze” Ireland experienced last year.

Snow and sleet are to be expected in the northern half of the country, particularly on Thursday. The rest of the country will be dry but extremely cold. Scotland and the north of Britain will feel the worst of it but Ireland will not escape.

O’Shea also warned that, like last year’s cold snap, this year’s will bring “serious problems” on the roads. The AA Roadwatch asked that the public check their car batteries and type ahead of this cold snap.
