There are plenty of jobs for backpackers in OZ and some just want a free ride and they are not all Irish.

Backpackers are different from those immigrating for work. The backpacker are usually students checking out the scene and moving around, tending more looking for a good time than work. they'll take on part time jobs if they want to build up cash but arent seriously immigrating for work. Most have plans to go home and are taking a year out. Those immigrating are trying to find solid, permanent jobs that allow them to survive there - let's not mix the two up. I wouldnt be surprised if some backpackers tried to land some free meals to save their money but their situation isnt as dire as those who left ireland on a prayer of finding work to support themselves/family. The stupidity on both parties is not going prepared to be able to survive for a few months if you can't find work or are looking. Those coming to the USA are equally foolish - don't they seem how many highly qualified graduates are out of work here. don't come thinking just becuase you are a grad and irish you'll land a job - you might but the conditions wont be hectic as the employers will know you're a higher risk, need a visa and will take lower pay. Be smart - be prepared whereever you go - they dont just lap up the irish anymore - it takes more than a degree and a smile...

You're mixing up two categories. Backpackers are NOT immigrants. They're young people who are granted temporary residence with temporary work permits. After a certyain length of time they're expected to go home. Immigrants, on the other hand, are admitted for permanent residency without restrictions. Your backpackers are clearly on the make, ekeing out their earnings by getting free grub.
