Irish animal lovers and vets alike are upset over the racy images featured in the 2011 Puppy Love calendar. The images portray scantily clad women in unusual poses with dogs.
The calendar which was printed to raise money for an animal rescue charity in County Wicklow is being accused of promoting bestiality. It seems that while some of the photos are quite tasteful others have been taken for shock value.
The March photo of 22-year-old Polish model Agata Dembiecka holding a puppy her naked breast has caused most controversy. Petshops are boycotting the calendar and 12 of its backers have pulled out.
Adelheid Walsh, originally from Norway, was one of the original creators along with Dublin-based photographer Karol Liver.
Speaking to the Daily Mail Walsh said, "We wanted to raise money for the animal shelter as it is non-state funded. We had no idea the Irish public would be so judgmental … Why should we be sorry for this calendar? We've done nothing wrong and we can't say we shouldn't have done it because we would do it all again.
"We have a soft spot for animals and so does the model Agata. She is actually a member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). She loves animals,” she said.
TV vet Peter Wedderburn, from Bray, County Wicklow, said that the picture of the puppy may be about nurturing animals but it's entirely wrong.
"It could lead to accusations of cruelty, and many people will be concerned for the welfare of the puppy … I think it's distasteful to show photos of dogs suckling on a woman. I'm concerned about it just as much as I would be concerned about dogs being dressed up in wedding outfits just to take photos.
"The puppy would not suffer any long-term consequences but it's a moral issue. Fully dressed people are the best way to raise awareness," he said
ASH animal rescue have come out in support of the calendar. Spokeswoman Helena Le Mahieu said, "It's a beautiful calendar and the picture is very tasteful. People should get over the minor details like this and get behind this calendar.”

Where can I buy a few of those calendars? I have to agree with AuraSphere.
AuraSphere | Feb 02, 2011, 02:48 PM EST
"Bestiality anyone? What a bunch of sick puppies. I can only imagine what the other poses were." It's not bestiality because it's not sexual in nature. It's a female using her breast for what it was designed to do, which is to nurture infants. While the idea itself is sexy to me, it's non-sexual in nature. The only weird thing is that women breastfeeding animals is not common. Still, us humans drink cow milk, so why the double standard? I doubt she's even lactating. The puppy is just sucking on her nipple to show the illustration. I think it's sexy in an endearing way. Because it takes more care and effort to nurse a creature that's not yours. I find that kind of maternal care to be attractive. And it's far from animal abuse. If I was a woman, and I had a starving puppy, or anything in my possession, and I wanted to save it, I might do the same thing. It would be more cruel to let it die. Hell even other animals have the instinct to nurse creatures of different species. It's not common, but not unheard of. Humans are mammals too, meaning they give milk from the breast. It's just one of the primary functions of mammals. In a way, this picture depicts that at its fullest. Of course some people will be put off by the fact that it's a human and a dog, and only for that reason. It just looks natural. She doesn't seem to mind there's a puppy sucking her nipple, and the puppy looks cute too. It also goes without say that that puppy will never realize how lucky it is to be in a position a lot of men would die to be in, lol.

jamieLM: : That Curpeter @12.47 is misleading all you Americans again with his anti-English bigotry. Please don’t fall for it! ....Fact:- The British Parliament banned Foxhunting in February 2005. Those British who wish to continue this bloody 'sport’, now have to go to Ireland where their bloodlust is well provided for. ..... It is ironic that this artistic picture to aid Irish animal charities is suggestive of a Metaphor for Ireland. - A snivelling parasitic runt cur that doesn’t care what tit it sucks on!
IrishTierney | Jan 06, 2011, 01:42 PM EST
The Irish people need to find something better to do with their time. What a bunch of prudes. The amimals don't really care about how the money is raised, the fact that it gets raised is what counts! The photo's are actually pretty artistic anyway. What a creative way to raise money selling calanders for a good cause. I tip my hat to Walsh and Liver for their creativity. It's a shame the animals have to suffer because of a few prudes!!!
cuddlybuddly | Jan 05, 2011, 01:58 PM EST
A very attractive woman breast feeding a puppy....eh...well it sends distress signals to my brain, especially as she looks like a dominatrix sex Goddess- get the puppy outta there I say, and quickly. I'll take him! just get him away from that weird psycho model from hell
haikued2 | Jan 05, 2011, 11:26 AM EST
Well I guess what is cruelty to some is not to others. How is this cruel to the puppy? Unnecessary, yes, but get real...it does not promote bestiality and is certainly attention grabbing. The bigger question, why did the calendar maker think it was a good idea?
jamieLM | Jan 04, 2011, 08:50 PM EST
sirpeter, you're right. Cruelty to animals is a worldwide thing. In the U.S., we've got our usual idiots/jerks committing acts of cruelty to animals and then we have the "Michael Vick's" with their dog fighting and the low-lifes running their puppy mills, to name a few. It keeps every state's SPCAs busy, 24/7. We also prosecute animal abusers. I think the picture is stupid and distasteful. They couldn't sell a calendar with cute puppies to dog lovers unless it had provocative pictures??? Give me a break! I grew up with dogs. They were always very well treated and loved. They ate dog food, were disciplined, knew who their pack leaders were, and none of them ever bit anyone. Molygannon, there are very serious problems in the world to be concerned about, so I'd rate this as an example of "annoying" calendar producers with no common sense.
moygannon | Jan 04, 2011, 05:52 PM EST
Nothing abusive about the picture - the dog appears to be having a good time. Ireland has much more to concern itself with - finance, gay priests, horrendous weather conditions. Some common sense would be beneficial.
sirpeter | Jan 04, 2011, 12:47 PM EST
Yerffac..I'm not disputing the fact that there is animal cruelty, but i also live in Ireland, but animal cruelty is not just confined to Ireland. The English go fox hunting and go badger baiting where the poor animals are torn limb from limb by dogs, they shoot rabbits and wild deer for sport, some get away injured and die a slow death. The Spanish have Bullfighting as a national pastime..they torture the poor bull to death. Some People are cruel to animals, but it's a world wide thing. At least you can be prosecuted in Ireland..Don't ever go to a third world country, some countries don't care about human life never mind been cruel to an animal.
Marion211 | Jan 04, 2011, 10:31 AM EST
Disgusting idea...there are so many other ways to raise funds and awareness for those animals in need. Someone at ASH is perverted and needs to be removed so the animals will truly be protected.
Yerffac | Jan 04, 2011, 10:14 AM EST
Sirpeter--maybe you live in a posh part of Ireland--and maybe you are not cruel to animals, but I lived down the country, in Co. Louth to be exact, and I saw what I saw growing up in Ireland, and I still see an appaling disregard for animals. They still drown kittens and pups. Call up any shelter and you will hear stories. I have a photo of a dead dog washed up on the Louth shore with its legs tied. Real humane.

Kate008 | Jan 03, 2011, 05:49 PM EST
She needs a new do - as in hairdo - some natural makeup would be nice so she doesn't resemble Cruella De Vil. She needs to give that pup to its mother's teat and save hers for when she has a baby. Honestly, people will do anything to make money.
sirpeter | Jan 03, 2011, 04:10 PM EST
Yerffac..Maribone just said it was disgusting, which most people think.ASH animal rescue have come out in support of the calendar.Which makes me wonder a bit.I had a goldfish once,She lives for 25 years in a big tank,Do you know why? Because i treated the goldfish as a goldfish wants to be treated.I didn't kill it with kindness or treat it like a human. But i gave what that goldfish needed to survive and be happy.ASH animal rescue, if they condone treating animals like humans like in that picture. If i had the power I would fire the lot of them, and i have a very good reason.A vet told me once, that the amount of dog owners who treat their dogs like humans by overfeeding them, smothering them to much with affection till they think they are the alpha male and then they bite someone in the family or a stranger, and then they turn on the dog and he has to be destroyed is a big problem too. Those dog owners are not animal lovers..they are animal abusers. To me that calendar besides it been a bit perverse..Is promoting animal abuse because they are targeting those "animal lovers" who think that picture is so sweet.Plus in Ireland by law you only have to give 10% of the money collected to charity,so i'll let your mind do the rest....PS: You said the Irish are not animal lovers, most Irish people are not cruel to animals. That's a sweeping statement,so you better cop on to yourself there.I don't like to be lumped in with animal cruelty.

You people should watch what you say; that's my wife you're talking about. And who the heck is that woman? Many of the comments posted in response to the above picture were pretty darn funny. I will be reading the articles in Irish Central before my other dailies.

I wasn't aware that citizen's in Ireland had it so good that they have time to concern themselves with such matters. Had this calendar been marketed in the U.S., you would see that we have way to many problems to protest a calendar. Additionally, it would have sold millions.
Yerffac | Jan 03, 2011, 03:12 PM EST
Maribone--disgusting is it? Not as disgusting as the way the Irish treat their animals--drown newborn kittens and puppies instead of having their animals neutered (in a bag with a stone and into the river, even adult cats & dogs) beat donkeys to death, fill the roads with stray dogs when the novelty of the Christmas puppy wears off...dump newborn kittens in fields to starve and perish to death in the cold, poison cats & dogs. Believe me, the Irish are not animal lovers. I grew up there, saw it all. A couple of years ago still the swarms of starving strays wandering the roads--saw my own brother and sister-in-law let a poor stray dog starve before their eyes. The poor thing was so hungry it ate an apple off the tree in their yard. Still they did nothing. I called the animal shelter and they said they were full to the doors...

A human, unbridled female debauchee with an innocent little dog. A have seen more photos on their page, and they were more conventional. A men's calendar, not my cup of tea, but I still cannot find out what kind of abuse of animals it might be. Perhaps people are too shy to say that actually it is immoral from Catholic point of view (because, indeed, it is...not the put, anyway...) The pup is so small that it cannot recognize whose breast it actually is (remember a kitten that tried to suck my breast some time ago, until I delivered it to it's mum.)

"Posted by CitizenWhy on Jan 02, 2011, 12:13 PM EST PETA has been proven to be a fraud. Do not donate." As someone who is deeply involved in animal rescue, having 10 animals inside now, and more outside, I would agree with you. Please, everybody, PLEASE, FOR GOD'S SAKE: never, ever buy from a puppy shop, have a heart, would you sell your child to just anybody as these puppy shops do? (They are legally bound to sell the dog to who wants to buy if they cannot prove they are abusive). You all know about puppy mills and don't believe the liars who sell the dogs: "Oh, we use only certified breeders, yada:" My response to the puppy shop owners is that any responsible breeder would have you come to the kennel, be made to spend time in front of them with the breeder, a call to your veterinarian would be made to see if you are a responsible pet caretaker (this is key), and you would only be allowed to buy the dog or cat if the breeder found that you are able to show a lot of responsibility and understanding of the breed and the care of the animal. More people than not are lousy pet "owners". They refuse to pay for all the medical care a pet needs, give them up if they move, etc. People are so selfish and heartless to animals. It's amazing. Some are good, but the majority congratulate themselves and are NOT good. Why are do many dogs brought to shelters? "Oh, we are having a baby". " We are moving". I get riled up because I am one of the people who does rescue work and am disgusted with so many humans.
MarthaAnne | Jan 02, 2011, 07:02 PM EST
I just think that it's stupid and boring and not at all interesting (the provocative photos, I mean). We have, as of now, 9 inside cats that we rescued from the streets, a dog who was in 3 shelters, have had 5 dogs in 16 years (took in old dogs from shelters) and we volunteered for 2 years in a shelter. We also care for daily feeders (cats) outside and are certified in TNR (Trap neuter return) so that more kittens are not born. So, we are in the same "club" as are these people who made the calendar and I just think it is not as cool and interesting and smart as they seem to think it is (not to mention: patronizing to the non-rescue public, as if people need these kinds of photos to just CARE about animals). It's just obnoxious and arrogant, what they have done with this ridiculous calendar. It seems as if they are more interested in looking cool, special, fashionable or something than helping the animals in need!!!
Watereskhill | Jan 02, 2011, 06:34 PM EST
Next year's Calendar 'Neptune Calls' is already under contract. With the same models. To save the seals off the coast of Galway. Their young are also called 'pups' and will need some tasteful nurturance. Two at a time would be heartwarming in it's humanitarian kindness to our companions in the sea. Now that most of the Selkies are on the pension.

Why the outrage? Human/canines go way back. The ancient hero founders of Rome, Romulus and Remos were saved as infants by a she-wolf who suckled and cared for them. So there is historic precedent behind this act of kindness. But the real issue is: is that an i or an l in biggies008 name?

Creakinggate..What are you on about..Deerskins again for.Did you not read your mental health report?..........NEWSLETTER (The P.R.O.C): Corkieleakia the southern branch of the of The Royal Daily Liar Newspaper has to-day released what can only be described as the illiterate delusional rantings of a megalomaniac, not seen in the western world since the release of Hitler’s book ..Mein Kampf.Like Mein Kampf the article is full delusional visions of grandeur, mixed with unintelligible ranting about Deer-skin’s and Garda-skin’s and paranoia about possible invasion of Dumpland. It also has a more sinister note in that the writer has visions of crowds of Jackeen’s laughing manically at a person been thrown into the river Whiffy from the new Feck it Bridge.A leading Psychologist was asked by the P.R.O.C newsletter, what it all means. The monocled Psychologist, Dr. Know-De-Loon said the interpretation was quite simple. While it is clear we are dealing with a dangerous megalomaniac, which is not all that uncommon in Dumpland. I feel it is certain key words in his scribbling’s that reveal his deep emotional problems. The key words are.. Pfizer Riser..Deer or Stag...P.r.i.c.k and the Feck It Bridge. In Sigmund Freuds own words he is suffering from a dysfunctional penis. His obsession is quite clear from the Stag which has horns and has virility to the drooping penis-like appendage on the new Feck It Bridge, aptly named by the Jackeen’s after they saw it. This dangerous megalomaniac with a frustrating dysfunctional penis needs to be removed from society as quickly as possible.

Clearly, it is an Irish pup pictured above since it looks like it is quite at ease suckling the (welfare) teat (sic) like a fair number of those in the populace. In all seriousness, the outrage over the photo reflects the increasing Anglo-ization of Ireland. To quote Gordon Gekko in "Wall Street" back in 1987: "Just got on the board of directors of the Bronx Zoo, cost me $2 million, funny thing about WASP's, love animals, can't stand people."

I've seen a pic of an African woman breastfeeding a pig and I've seen footage of a woman from India breastfeeding a calf.No uproar about that.Perhaps if the woman in the picture was Chinese and fattening the puppy for slaughter and human consumption there'd be no uproar either as alot of people in China eat dogs. But the woman in the picture is a model from Poland and there's no good reason for her to be suckling the puppy. So its beastiality or else its a baby wearing the head and pelt of a recently deceased puppy.

Anybody that drinks cows milk should have no opposition to this photo. But you Irish are so bloody parochial. You chased all your writers out because of you censorship laws and more recently Bob Geldof because you were too narrow minded to let him play a concert at Lepordstown Racecourse. I thought the EEC might have opened your minds, but no. Perhaps the mass emigration because of the failed Celtic Tiger might result in a more educated Irish mentality on return. If a woman's milk is for babies, then cows milk is for calves. So what are you going to put in your porridge tomorrow morning Ireland ????? You are so pathetic over there.
