The latest disclosures of secret U.S. cables by WikiLeaks show that Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness were aware of the IRA’s plans to carry out the Northern Bank robbery in December 2004.

Sinn Fein leader Adams has strongly denied the story. He told Irish radio this morning that "I repudiated it then, as did Martin. It isn’t true…I then spoke to the Taoiseach privately about this matter.

“It was my conviction at the time, because there was very intense, as there is now, electoral rivalry between Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil.

“I saw this and still see this as part of Fianna Fáil’s attack on or fight back against Sinn Féin at that time.”

“I worked very closely with, and indeed still work very closely with, American ambassadors and the US president at the time, vice president and other members of the administration going back 15 years or so,” said Mr Adams.

“They never raised this with me.”

The leaked cables report that, then Prime Minister Bertie Ahern held critical peace process negotiations with Mr Adams and Mr McGuinness when they knew the IRA was planning the $40 million robbery. Mr Ahern believed they were IRA leaders.

According to the new leaks the Irish Government also believed that British intelligence agencies had a senior informant within the republican movement.

In February 2005 the U.S. ambassador to Dublin, James Kenny, reported a Department of Justice officials informed the embassy of Mr Ahern’s concerns.

According to the cable the official told the ambassador “that the GOI [Government of Ireland] does have ‘rock solid evidence’ that Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness are members of the IRA military command and for that reason, the Taoiseach [Prime Minister] is certain they would have known in advance of the robbery”.

In another cable in 2005 the robbery was raised again. Mr Kenny reported that the Prime Minster was concerned about the special U.S. envoy to Ireland Mitchell Reiss. “The Taoiseach . . . believes Sinn Féin leaders were aware of plans to rob the Northern Bank even as they negotiated with him last fall,” it said. “Publicly, he has been unprecedentedly critical of Sinn Féin and, until recently, [there were] greatly reduced private contacts as well.”

well, when adams and mcguinness said they had to consult the IRA over the Northern Irish Bank Robbery, Minister McDowell told them "to go into the mens restroom and look in the mirrors and consult the IRA leaders." Where do people like Cillowen think they got the money to pay all the "volunteers" when they called off "the War". McDowell as Minister for Justice knew they were IRA leaders as did the rest of the Irish Republic. They seem to have been living high off the hog ever since. SO WAKE UP PEOPLE! FAR FROM BEING PEACEMAKERS THEY WANT TO TURN THE IRISH REPUBLIC INTO A MARXIST STATE AND START ANOTHER CIVIL WAR AND THAT WE VOTERS CANNOT ALLOW! THEY CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO COLLINS,DEVALERA,THOMAS CLARKE, PEARSE ETC. WHO WERE EDUCATED MEN.
even if its true, what of DeValera, Collins etc who were all IRA members.
Stupid statement Seamus, especially considering that even the Gardai accept it was not an execution but a robbery gone wrong. Really ignorant stuff on your part, maybe you should read a little more on the subject before blatantly lying.
The inside knowledge referred to in the Irish government during this time is McDowell...nuff said. Lets hope the Irish electorate have the sense to seriously enhance Sinn Fein's electoral mandate.
@londonirishtom..ok you win..pppp...I knew i wasn't going to win this one.Guess it wasn't a very smart thing to say.I hold my hands up in utter defeat on this one.
Yes go ahead and throw all the low down dirty smears on Gerry Adams, He was the one who was NOT AFRAID of the dark side of politics, of communicating with the terrorists and bringing murder back to communication and peaceful means...and because he was in the middle of this negotiation it's easy to tar him with the blood of the IRA...no it's all of us who did nothing but judge and condemn...at least Gerry Adams courageously got involved and lead the way back into communication between the factions and therefore is more linked with peacemaking in my mind. the time has perhaps come to stand for equality and what is best for all. Gerry Adams UNDERSTANDS the levels of rage in this country, and so like alchemy produces the gold
@sirpeter According to contemporary reports, the Garda did not have a chance to draw their weapons, let alone run off, before the killers struck after ramming into the escorting cop car. The gang didn’t get away with any cash for their efforts.
@londonirishtom..Extremely unlikely to happen, but if it did, they can have what they want..last thing i would want is the cops showing up..not when i have a gun in my chest..they should have had an armored security van..not a post office van..they should not have resisted..they were up against highly trained men who are very good at this sort of thing.
@sirpeter, Next time some guy sticks a gun in your ribs and makes his demands, I hope you’ll understand if your local cops ‘have the sense’ to run in the opposite direction?
Michael Collins did the best he could, and every republican deep in his heart knows this.Garda Jerry McCabe was not executed. The Gardaí had been armed with .38 Smith & Wesson revolvers and an Uzi,it was a fair fight for the money in the post office van,if he had any sense he would have ran away.Payed with his life protecting bankers money.Gerry Adams,a fine broth of a boy.
Like Paulie in the Godfather who had to answer for Sonny's death, Gerry Adams' day of reckoning for Garda Jerry McCabe's 1996 execution on Main street in Adare, Limerick is about to come. In one of life's tragic ironies, McCabe was executed right outside a pub called Michael Collins. Yet, Gerry Adams is praised by Niall O'Dowd as a peacemaker and Michael Collins considered a traitor by some in the Republican movement.
Yes Phlutie me lhad. I hope you are not related to the great quarter back Doug, but here is the way I see it.Your ship is sinking kid and you are screaming and of course no one is listening.G,day to you now and be on your merry way.
Bertie and the Banks in Ireland stole more than a lousy 40 mill from the people of Ireland and now the people of Ireland have to pay more to recover their own money. So shut the F up Bertie you and your cronies in your little corrupt broken down FREE STATE.God save Ireland
PhlutiePhan..Your Tinfoil hat is slightly over to the side, you better fix it.
I can feel an election coming on,how much smear and fear can we engender before the announcement. If the I.R.A. took the $40 million maybe they can lend it to Fianna Fail at mates rates.
