Read more: Leading Irish journalist in underage sex probe
The identity of a leading Irish newspaper journalist accused of having sex with an underage girl has still not been revealed as speculation mounts as to who the person is.
He is being investigated for having sexual contact with an underage girl following the discovery by his daughter of a picture of a naked young girl on his cell phone.
The journalist’s daughter handed the phone to her mother who went to police.
The Irish Examiner reports that following the discovery the journalist signed himself into a psychiatric hospital and has been under suicide watch.
The Examiner reports that the shocking discovery was made three weeks ago when the journalist asked one of his daughters to bring his cell phone to a recycling center.
She discovered the naked picture of the girl, said to be a friend of hers on the phone.
Police identified the girl and informed her parents.
The girl later made a statement and said there had been some form of sexual contact between them.
A management meeting with journalists was held at the newspaper yesterday afternoon where he works to discuss the high profile case.
As long as the patient remains in the psychiatric hospital the police cannot compel him to be interviewed if doctors say he is in danger.
Police said they will wait until the psychiatrists give them the all-clear.
State broadcaster RTE News had first reported on Sunday that a leading journalist had been named by a 16-year -old girl as the person she had been having an illicit relationship with for two years.
The report set off a flurry of speculation and rumors. Meanwhile his identity has been a closely guarded secret.

@Reilleyfam - He didn't miss his calling, his employer will just find him another job with a fresh batch of victims! and the paedophile journalists will cover his tracks again!

Sickening - missed his calling, he should have been a Catholic priest. Then they'd just move him to a new location & give him a fresh crew of new victims.

Good point Trealach! The Media goes to great lengths to make it BIG news if a Roman Catholic Priest is guilty of this horrible sin and fails to acknowledge their own! As despicable is the priest that commit these atrocities, thanks be to God, it's a very small number that commit this horrible crime. Almost all are good, holy men of God.

If justice is to be done, and seen to be done, then it must be presumed without further evidence, that ALL Journalists are Pedophiles - after all one must exact the same level of judgment as was imposed on ALL clergy of the Roman Catholic Church by the Media. The question now is, how many more of these despicable pedophile journalists are there in society? Should a person even take the risk of talking to them?

colkelley, I'm beginning to believe you are right, about the incurability of pedophiles. Having them stop being interested in kids is like having me stop being interested in women! Remember, though, that technically a pedophile goes after pre puberty boys or girls. Someone interacting with a 16 year old is guilty of statutary rape. Father Bruce Ritter, founder of Covenant House in New York, fit that description. On a side note, I believe that near age partners should not be snared by statutary rape laws. It is a travesty of justice to arrest, say an 18 year old boy for becoming intimate with a 16, or 17 year old girl. They may well have been active earlier, but should it be considered a "crime", once he turns 18?? This is absurd, and should not be pursued by police, or District Attorneys. Most U.S. states make allowances for this type of thing, but some do not.

In this "high profile case", freedom of the press is the freedom to suppress the identity of one of their own, the fourth estate's version of the 'blue wall of silence.'Not that I would want his name revealed. How terrible must his daughter feel? Imagine what his suicide would do to her. However, such consideration would not deter the press from revealing the identity of most anyone else in such a "high profile case."

Execute him. Pedophiles cannot be treated or rehabilitated by any means known.
