Why is Senator George Mitchell allowing anti-Irish American vitriol and ridicule?

Peace process hero on the line for anti-Irish and Irish American remarks by underling

Former Senator George Mitchell is rightfully a hero in Irish America, a man who took on the thankless job as President Clinton’s peacemaker in Northern Ireland and against all odds succeeded.

For that he was nominated for the Nobel Prize and probably should have got it alongside David Trimble and John Hume, the two Northern Irish leaders who did.

But now Senator Mitchell is in deep danger of having his good name and reputation sullied because of the incredible vitriol being aimed at Irish Americans, and indeed, many in Ireland, by the leader of the organization that essentially bears his name.

Trina Vargo of the US-Ireland Alliance which promotes the Mitchell Scholarships which bring 12 students a year to Ireland uses every opportunity to slam and cast disdain on the Irish American community and many Irish leaders.

Her latest broadside on the Mitchell scholars website was aimed at Prime Minister Enda Kenny for awarding an Irish heritage certificate to President Obama at the White House.

“The shop in Shannon Airport must have been out of leprechaun dolls and chunks of the auld sod,” Vargo wrote sneering at Kenny.

She also slammed Irish Americans and stated that Irish people were laughing at them every St.Patrick’s Day "The Irish are just so grateful for the attention that they grit their teeth, take it, and then laugh at the Yanks at the end of the night.”

This from a woman whose organization was set up to foster closer ties between Ireland an America.

George Mitchell has become an enabler in this farce. Vargo uses his name at every opportunity and Mitchell has been making calls to Capitol Hill to raise funds for Vargo to further feather her ample nest at the US-Ireland Alliance. ($175,000 salary, wonderful expense account)

Quite why Mitchell is allowing this blistering hate of Irish Americans to manifest itself in an organization he essentially stewards is hard to understand.

He is a man who is rightfully deeply protective of his legacy but he seems unable to understand how much damage is being done as a result of this hatred and invective that Vargo regularly spews. There have now been numerous incidents in this regard.

Anytime an Irish American leader deals with this issue they are shunted aside because Mitchell’s name is invoked.

No more I say. Someone needs to set Senator Mitchell straight on what is being done in his name and it needs to happen now.

Trina Vargo is due to receive $20 million from hard-pressed Irish taxpayers that was promised in the good times. Unlike the American Ireland Fund, which gracefully withdrew from a similar arrangement when the hard times hit, Vargo continues to insist.

Cillowen – so the Brits spend billions annually on NI, just because they like to hang on to a shamrock or two? An interesting but unlikely supposition…I question your logic as your (frequently repeated) posts always repeats the same error. The St Patricks Cross DOES NOT overlay the other two; the St George Cross is on top. Why do you never moan at the Aussies, Kiwis, or even a US State Government in their use of the St Patrick’s Cross? Do you want it for use on the tricolour? I think it’s high time we were told…preferably without the anti-Semitic garbage
Why did you ever think George Mitchell was on the Irish side?? He was the ventriloquist in the "negotiations" and the conning of the voters in the handing over the Six Counties His good name and reputation is long gone, that is. if he ever had one or both
Good news folks. The Irish in Ireland and around the world now have a long needed anti-defamation league and my wife is a member. I can't image the back lash if an Irish person attacked Trina Vargo's background in such a manner She is not fit for this job. You could not make such remarks against a Jewish, Black or Latino and rightly so, but Trina, along with many others, feel it's still open season on the Irish. Please look up the Irish anti-defamation league.
Vargo is just another disaster compliments of Teddy boy.His sponsorship of the 1965 Immigration law was a catastrophe for both Irish- born and Irish-Americans.It flooded the US with millions of third-worlders who are bringing this country to its knees and discriminated against northern Europeans{Irish} who basically built this country into the great nation it once was.`Burn in hell Mr. Chappaquidick!
Niall - An immediate independent audit of Ms. Vargo's US-Ireland Alliance is in order. Transparency and full disclosure would enlighten us all. What proportion of the group's multi-million-dollar funding is spent on the dozen scholarships? How much is actually spent to cover administrative and operating costs? Who are the members of Ms. Vargo's board of directors Who are the scholarship recipients and on what basis are they selected? More reporting, please.
cillowen. Senator Mitchell is not a joke and your ramblings are convoluted and off-point. For decades, he put much on the line to resolve conflict across the globe. seanomelb. Don't cast a wide net unless you know you're catching the right fish. One can't give credits to Ms. Vargo who truly is out of touch. Her verbal outbursts are beyond understanding. I have no idea what act(s) prompted her statements but her reasons are unfathomable. I am nonplussed.
A plague on Vargo and Mitchell
Think this headline is misleading-I can't see Mitchell "allowing" these things to be said-he has too much charachter for that-exactly the opposite of the liberal Trina Vargo.
I saw Trina Vargo's trash talking yesterday and took great umbrage at it. As usual, Niall, you are spot on! It is a shame Trina isn't a man, because being female, many will take my comment as sexist. But male or female, Trina (or anyone is the same capacity) needs to learn their place and learn a bit of respect as well.
This woman is very dangerous, and needs to be fired PDQ. I just hope George Mitchell reads Irish Central or someone close to him does. She's a disgrace, and what's more I'd like to see some kind official protest coming from Blueshirt Kenny...
Niall, an address for George Mitchell would be helpful.
Go raibh maith agat, Niall for the heads up on this one. I agree completely. This socialite from Pittsburgh needs to be replaced. She has a salary package of over a quarter of a million dollars and its coming from Irish and American taxpayers. With that she spews her vitriolic attacks on the same taxpayers. I don't care if she "worked" for Senator Ted Kennedy for 11 years! Her statements are out of line and she should be sacked. She is and extremely divisive American. Perhaps the job could go to someone of Irish descent or even native Irish. Or at least someone with a half ounce of tact.
Niall, thank you for shining a light on this counter productive use of both American and Irish public funds!
No! Trina is not impressed by "constitutional" Irish political life or politicians - it took wily old Ted to keep her half in check. Pity easy-going and kind-hearted George Mitchell didn't know her style when he backed her "bright idea" but he would do well to get clear.
Niall O'Dowd: my personal thanks for bringing attention to this issue.
