Updated: The Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio have been named as the next Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church in Rome. Named Pope Francis he briefly addressed the crowd of tens of thousand gathered below his balcony at St. Peter's Basilica, at the Vatican.

Pope Francis was named as the succesor to Pope Benedict XVI with at least 77 of the 115 cardinals in the conclave, which only lasted one day.

-------------------

2.19pm - The College of Cardinals have chosen a new pope. The white smoke billowing from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel indicating the vote had been made, was seen at 7.06pm, on Wednesday, March 13th.

The decision, made by the gathering of 115 Cardinals from around the world, including Irish Americans - New York's Timothy Dolan, Boston's Sean O'Malley, and LA's Roger Mahony and Irish Primate Sean Brady - only entered conclave on March 12.

The new pope will reveal himself to the people of Rome, from his balcony at St. Peter's Bascilica on Wednesday evening.

Both Dolan and O'Malley has been mentioned a popular options for the position. However, the post the new pope inherits will be a difficult one as the Catholic Church wrestes with challenges including a priest shortage, growing competition from evangelical Churches, the sexual abuse crisis and governing the Vatican itself.

The previous Pope, Benedict XVI, Joseph Ratzinger, stepped down from his eight-year tenure last month announcing he was no longer up to the mental and physical rigors of the job. He was the first pope in 598 years to resign.

Spoken like a true, foaming at the mouth lesbian.
How many lesbians have abortions, Smyrnian? Not many, I'd guess. Yet five Catholic bishops have vigorously opposed the Violence against Women Act simply because it includes the words "no person may be excluded from the law’s protections because of sexual orientation or gender identity." They'd let an epidemic of domestic violence and rape continue because VAWA ignores the sexual orientation of victims. These men, who urge Catholics to oppose protecting women from violence, are Bishop Blaire of Stockton (Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice), Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco (Chairman for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage), Bishop Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend (Chairman on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth), Abp. Lori of Baltimore, and Abp. Gomez of LA. Their fear of lesbians having rights is their excuse for depriving all women of the protection of law, and abortion is your excuse. If abortion were illegal, wouldn't you find another excuse for keeping women victimized?
How about the oppression and mass extermination of the unborn? Where are their rights?
One day falcon flash may have a flash of brillance.
Only your grasp on sanity is tainted by your fanaticism about abortion, falconflash. Catholic opposition to basic human rights for women is fanatically anti-Christian in its fear and hatred of women. The UN's COMMMIT initiative against violence that targets women and girls has nothing to do with abortion, contraception, or same-sex marriage. If for one moment you could break out of your fanatical hatred for women and READ the document, you would see that. No, you'd rather oppose any attempt to diminish the oppression of women that thrives under the protection of the Catholic Church and its Muslim allies at the UN.
Ireland North that would be the South American thing to do maybe you can add Bernardo O'Higgins and Simon Bolivar to yor list and why stop there Zapata,Villa etc.etc.etc. Just love that Asti spumante MissWhisp.
eiriamach....i don't know much about that UN campaign but if it is tainted by the corruption of abortion then it must be ended.
Agenda #1 - Repeal Papal Bull Laudibiliter of predecessor English Pope Adrian IV granting sovereignty of all the islands in the seas to King Henry II of England c1169-71. Agenda #2 - Proclaim the conquest and colonisation of Ireland a grievious mortal sin retrospectively. Agenda # 3 - Ditto apropos Islas de Malvinas. Agenda # 4 - Propose Ernesto 'Che' Guervara Ó Loingsigh for beatification - and Admiral Brown too!
Now lets wait for the "hes got some Irish in him"
There's a very obvious test for the man who is now pope. IF he reverses the Vatican's opposition to the UN's campaign to stop violence against women and girls, then his concern for the oppressed of the world might ring genuine. If he continues the Vatican's opposition to this vital work, he's the enemy of women and girls everywhere. And we can't afford to close our eyes to the power of that opposition.
Shades of Cardinal Karol Józef Wojtyła. Does the Vatican “Hope” (?) to gentrify Argentina`s Socialist Republic, the way it did the Soviet Bloc`s Solidarity Movement ? Of course it does. The Politics and Disposition of Vatican Inner Sanctum is obvious in their choice of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The nomination of a Latin American Pope is doubtless the result of conclave Catalogue and Compromise. The Church will continue to pander Bourgeois Proletarian sympathies, for a staid course on her more pressing issues. That the Church will attempt to mitigate the succession of Hugo Chavez, in the direction of Capitalist Globalization, in exchange for address of her own Social and Spiritual addenda. Thus the local Argentine/American Cafeteria will acquire a preferred position for its Portrait of the Pope, among it`s other Celebrities and VIP`s, and the Church will acquire a better position to negotiate Liberalizing efforts of her more conservative conventions ... Pray for us Pope Francis I
PhlutiePhan - Is he allowed to change all the extra STUFF that has been added, subtracted and then added again since the Gospels were written at the wim of those who were in charge at the time? Just as many evangelicals seem to think that our Bible comes to us just as it was originally written and ignore the mistranslations and editing that it endured, many Catholics seem to think that the rules they were brought up with are the rules Christians have lived under for 2000 years ignoring the true history of Christianity. WWJD? I suspect that this new Pope might actually ask himself that question before acting. Let us kindle a tiny little spark of hope.
Lets see what this latest yahoo has hidden in his closet...
All I can say Jacer is,you are entitled to your born again christianity. Sadly I think you have taken it to the extreme. I do hope the new pope is a bit more progressive than the previous two, like thomas I doubt it.
I think this Pope is going to change the media’s and lots of others' perspectiveS of the Papacy greatly, while keeping true to all of the tenets of being a fisher of men like St Peter and his fellow Apostles were caused to be by the Holy Spirit of God at what we call the Pentecost. Feranbegawdsake...early this morning, while we were sleeping or having lunch in whatever part of the world we all live in, His Holiness went to the Church of Our Lady Maggiore in Rome, in a simple policeman’s car, for no other reason than to simply pray, to plea, before the Sacred Relics within that Church for simple guidance and help in the job he’s been chosen to do on a massive world-wide scale. I know why he went there first this morning... I’ve been to the Church of Mary Major a few times but each time I went to pray there, I came away never with the same feelings – that’s what enlightenment within that Church does to you, you become enlighten more and more each time you visit it. I am sure that is why Pope Francis went there the first morning of his Papacy. .. I am with all Catholics responding to what he very simply asked us to do when he appeared on that balcony before the mixed-faiths crowds... to simply pray for him as he does the Papal duties. Amen on that, I say... It’s a job no one wants but one which only one is chosen for at any time in history and indeed in the future. May God bless, guide and protect our new Pope and our Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI. Amen
