A Washington Post editorial writer,Jackson Diehl, has slammed Middle East peace envoy George Mitchell for continually referring to Northern Ireland and his experience there during the peace talks.

In a piece entitled ‘Is George Mitchell in the Middle East or Northern Ireland? “ Diehl writes.

“A dozen years ago, former senator George Mitchell helped to broker a peace accord, the "Good Friday agreement," between warring Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. The Irish still appear to be grateful. But I'm not so sure about Israelis and Palestinians -- who appear to be doomed to listen to Mitchell draw parallels between their conflict and that of the Irish at every possible opportunity.”

Diehl says Mitchell has brought up his previous experience as broker in virtually every media briefing he has conducted since his appointment by President Obama in January 2009.

He called Mitchell’s point in doing this “simple, and alarmingly reductionist:”

Diehl says Mitchell constantly refers to Northern Ireland.

"I’ll return, if I might, to my experience in Northern Ireland," he quotes Mitchell as saying  at an Aug. 20 briefing at the State Department.
Back them Mitchell said “ In a sense, in Northern Ireland, we had about 700 days of failure and one day of success."

Diehel points out that “Mitchell himself has taken to pointing out that "circumstances are very different" between the Middle East and Ireland and that "one must be careful about transferring principles," as he put it Wednesday. Yet he keeps doing it. I can't help but wonder if his memories of past glories are clouding his judgment of current events.” Diehl concludes

I am not sure that Mr Mitchell suggesting that what worked in NI will work in the Middle East. I would presume the importance to refer to NI is that what many had written off as 'unsolvable' is on the road to resolution.
I think it's a very good Comparison.George Mitchell seems to be very good at cleaning up the mess of British Imperialism and it's policy of divide and rule. Can't see it working though with an american backed Israel.

Senator Mitchell should be acknowledged and applauded for the work he did brokering peace in Ireland. But realizing peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians is going to be considerably more challenging. And judging from history since the late 1940s, its doubtful that there will be any lasting peace anytime soon between these two adversaries, despite Mitchell's best efforts.
games people play - mitchell's mantra won't fit for NI As in Paisley brilliance - continues doing yeoman work for masonic protesting brethern. had great success with agitators of NI ensuring UK's symbolism is safe from a United Ireland outcome - thus the harp and St Patrick's cross removal from the occupier flags and standards will remain unaffested.
As our dedicated neocon Israel Firsters in the corporate media have taught us so patiently, Mitchell's real mistake lies in assuming that, as in the Anglo/Irish conflict, both the Israelis AND Palestinians are real human beings with- presumably -the same natural, God-given rights. Mitchell has failed to comprehend the official truth that the Palestinian Muslims and Christians are subhuman, goyim trash and the Zionists are superhuman ubermensch. Send George to study hall for re-education!!!
Mitchell reminds me of Al Bundy of the comedy series married with children. Als only claim to fame in his whole life was when he was a highschool football player @ Polk High and scored a record 3 touchdown in one game. After that he got married and had children and his high school athletic prowess was the only thing he could point out that was a success for him in his whole life.
unconvinced: who cares what YOU think? birther nut!
Can't get peace if you're not dealing with the parties that are in conflict!...should be the lesson from N. Ireland. They tried for years in vain with Nationalists/Unionists when the problem was with Republicans & Loyalists. First Israel said they can't deal w/ Arafat & the PLO...got rid him/them and demanded democratic elections...which brought Hamas to ELECTED power. Let's face it...Israel wants the status quo as long as it will last...which basically imprisons a people in their own land...and will continue to keep the US as the hated big brother/partner to THE ENEMY with Islamic extremists around the world.
and Jackson Diehl achieved what?
Who cares what George Mitchell thinks - they hold up the Good Friday as the great achievement but it has been built on lies and deceit therefore will fall and what will he say then ? He was well paid to do a job in NI - He should mind his own business . Perhaps he could worry about Obama - A Kenyan man how did he become president I wonder?
I think Mitchell is an old man who should retire and like most Americans should worry about America and mind their own business.
I support George Mitchell's efforts and approach. It is possible he's trying to drive the parties together by boring them to death with the history lessons about the GFA. But there are parallels between the twosituations.
