DeanJackson, I replied back at one of the original articles this discussion began at, "Abuse victim believes Irish pedophile priest Fr Brendan Smyth murdered an American child," Kerry O'Shea, Jun 8, 2012. But on your question here: I think that the deep-rooted Irish culture has no Victorian-age prudery, the Irish are knowledgeable about the range of human sexual behavior including pathologies, and prudish attitudes about sexuality are limited to church preaching. Therefore, I conclude that while the Irish are outraged and will be for many years about pedophile attacks on their children, the cover-ups by the bishops actually brought the Irish Church down. People will deal with pathological and immoral acts, even outrageous immorality, but when they cannot deal with them because bishop-protectors have blanketed them with secrecy, lies, and shredded documents, then public outrage becomes insupportable and the institution fails. In any case, that's how it looked to me. And the cover-ups were, unfortunately, routine behavior for generations of church officials. So again I conclude, no 20th century conspiracy was involved.
It is said his actions were aimed at highlighting “the Vatican's concerns over its deteriorating status in Ireland”. That is all the Roman church is worried about- loss of sheep and money. If the Roman church was sorry, Benny would have handed over all the child rapists to the police.
