Following a New York Times report on the tens of thousands of horses and ponies abandoned in Ireland the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been receiving donations from the United States.
The New York Times article, on December 20th, described the ponies and horse that “have been abandoned amid Ireland’s financial nightmare”.
Orla Aungier of the DSPCA said the donations which were arriving from the U.S. were “very badly needed”. She told the Irish Times “There is nothing significant as yet but the report seems to have caught the public attention and people there seem willing to help.”
She continued “All I can tell you is we have 1,500 to 2,000 surplus horses here in Dublin and we are working flat out to do what we can for them.”
The article focused on the main locations where the abandoned horses are being dumped. They called Dunsink tip outside Dublin “a place that wounds the heart” in a country that is famous for their love of horses.
Joe Collins, president of the Veterinary Council of Ireland, estimates that there are between 10,000 and 20,000 abandoned horses across Ireland. The article continued “Another leading expert on horses, Ted Walsh, the father of one of the country’s most famous steeplechase jockeys, Ruby Walsh, has said that the number could be as high as 100,000.”

Woundedbolix of the Kickapoopoo..Even though it's Christmas Day and it's peace and good will to all men.Educating the thick stupid cannot stop for even one day.I just don't like the way people make sweeping statements about the Irish people and my Country.I don't defend the wrongdoings by a few in Ireland, but i won't let you tar and feather us all for the sins of a few.And for your information ...Horses,Dogs,Cats and any other unwanted animal is put to sleep after they enter I.S.P.C.A. If they can't find a home or they don't have room.

You see ironbed,my way with words can be a little harsh when i hear you have a bigger picture of WIDESPREAD animal abuse by Irish people. You are saying that there is widespread abuse of animals and that the irish has alot to be ashamed of.Why should the irish feel ashamed of what these people do?Do we all have to share in some collective guilt, because of the very few people who commit unspeakable acts. It's your way with words are the problem.

ironbed: It's Christmas Eve, so I have better things to do than respond to sirpeter, but I think you are wrong to say he has "a way with words". He doesn't. He's a foulmouth supporter of the ruling party in Ireland. That's why he defends every crazy or horrible thing that goes in that country. In the current case, his solution to abuse and starvation of horses is to kill the horses. Go Figure.

SIRPETER, you have a way with words. But back to the issue. This article, yes, is about abused horses but I am looking at the bigger picture of widespread animal abuse by Irish people. You are right, there is no point debating that with you. With your tunnel vision and parochialism and inability to see the bigger picture, I would be wasting my time and you would loose even more reasoning.

That animal in the picture should be put down straight away, you cannot bring a horse in that condition back to health..We don't need fu*king donations from the fu*kin'U.S Just put the unwanted animals down..The U.S should keep their money for their own problems and the U.S has plenty.

ironbed...Don't be such an idiot.Take it from me you don't know what you are talking about,If you did,I'd spend some time reasoning it out with you,and if you had a point,i'd have no problem saying i was wrong. But what you are saying is childish and you really need to think more about what you are saying.Irish people don't treat animals badly..If we did we wouldn't have some of the best meat products and dairy products in the world.Irish people love their pets, people who had horses..which is mostly the well off are been a selfish bunch of irresponsible pr*ck,who got horses because it was a status thing in the good times, but didn't have any love for horses and now can't afford them,so like the pr*cks they are they just abandoned them. Now are you a little more educated or are you going to be dumb all your life.

ironbed | Dec 23, 2010, 06:26 PM EST
Sirpeter....if this was merely an isolated case of animal abuse in Ireland I would agree with your opinion but when one considers the litany of animal abuse: horses, cats, dogs, racing pigeons, farm animals etc. throughout the country I'm afraid we Irish have a lot to be be thoroughly ashamed of.
kilkenny999 | Dec 23, 2010, 05:49 PM EST
i am lost for words,it is just outrageous.
sirpeter | Dec 23, 2010, 12:42 PM EST
WoundedKnee..Instead of using the work Irish..USE the words..THESE PEOPLE..99.99% of Irish people don't even have a horse..I could blame all Americans for sh*t that a few Americans do too.And Ironbed ..you too..idiots

Owning a horse is not cheap and would be one of the first things to shed when you lose all your money and have no job. If it comes down to feeding your children or feeding the horse, hmmm moral dilemma? I suppose to some of you PETA members. Too many urban cowboys learn everything they know about livestock from movies and television. Out here in the west we have wild horses that used to get thinned out by government sharpshooters and ranchers. Now they have become "protected" and the government ninnies have rounded up vast herds of them and put them in pens to waste away.

WoundedKnee, as an Irishman I couldn't agree with you more. I am totally disgusted by the way animals are mistreated by the Irish. There are bepraved people in Ireland who lack compassion and neither care about animals. You are also correct about that arsehole Bono. Disgusting situation.
WoundedKnee | Dec 23, 2010, 11:42 AM EST
Truly, the Irish should be ashamed of themselves. Their behavior gets more contemptible all the time. At times I despise the Irish, even tho I share some ethnic heritage with them. It's a country totally without moral rules, structures, standards. And I remember that fool Bono arguing for children and teenagers' right to have horses when there was an attempt to bring in laws to regulate the vast trade in ponies and horses in the poorer areas of Dublin. Now there's a crisis of animal welfare and Bono's nowhere to be seen. Surprise.
