Sirpeter....if this was merely an isolated case of animal abuse in Ireland I would agree with your opinion but when one considers the litany of animal abuse: horses,cats,dogs,racing pigeons,farm animals etc. throughout the country I'm afraid we Irish have a lot to be be thoroughly ashamed of.

Owning a horse is not cheap and would be one of the first things to shed when you lose all your money and have no job. If it comes down to feeding your children or feeding the horse, hmmm moral dilemma? I suppose to some of you PETA members. Too many urban cowboys learn everything they know about livestock from movies and television. Out here in the west we have wild horses that used to get thinned out by government sharpshooters and ranchers. Now they have become "protected" and the government ninnies have rounded up vast herds of them and put them in pens to waste away.

Truly, the Irish should be ashamed of themselves. Their behavior gets more contemptible all the time. At times I despise the Irish, even tho I share some ethnic heritage with them. It's a country totally without moral rules, structures, standards. And I remember that fool Bono arguing for children and teenagers' right to have horses when there was an attempt to bring in laws to regulate the vast trade in ponies and horses in the poorer areas of Dublin. Now there's a crisis of animal welfare and Bono's nowhere to be seen. Surprise.
