US Vice-President Joe Biden invited to attend major Irish economic forum
Invite to follow President Obama’s lead issued to Mayo descendant
The Irish government wants US vice-president Joe Biden to follow Barack Obama’s lead – and help revitalize Ireland’s employment market.
Irish PM Enda Kenny and his Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton are attempting to woo Biden to Dublin to coincide with a major economic forum in October.
Kenny wants Biden, a man with Mayo roots like himself, to join former US President Bill Clinton at the second Global Irish Economic Forum to be hosted at Dublin Castle in the autumn.
The event, which launched in the autumn of 2009, is designed to promote business investment in the Irish economy and boost job creation programmes.
Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation Richard Bruton has already discussed a possible Biden trip with high ranking US government officials according to the Sunday Business Post.
Biden, whose great-grandmother was a Finnegan from Mayo, may not be able to attend the actual forum but could visit Ireland on a trip designed to complement the Forum which is intended to boost the involvement of the Irish Diaspora in the nation’s economic recovery.
Irish government sources have already said that President Clinton’s attendance at the event is a ‘good possibility’.
Intel chairman Craig Barrett, the man who made the decision to locate the technology multinational in Ireland, is also expected to attend the forum.
The Irish government expects that more than 300 global leaders from at least 30 countries will attend the Dublin Castle event.
