US Church borrowed at least $400 million from Irish bank to pay American abuse victims

The Catholic Church borrowed more than $400 million from AIB to pay American abuse victims.

The Catholic Church in the U.S. borrowed more than $400 million from Allied Irish Banks to compensate American victims of clerical sex abuse.

The huge compensation sum was paid from loans to the Church from the now state-owned Irish bank in 2007.

A new book entitled "Render Unto Rome: The Secret Life of Money in the Catholic Church" outlines the full extent of the dealings between the Church and Allied Irish Banks.

The $400 million borrowed was used to compensate clerical abuse victims in America and led to AIB becoming known as the Vatican’s banking arm in U.S. legal circles.

The money was raised by way of loans, guarantees and lines and was specifically used to pay-off clerical abuse victims according to the book’s author Jason Berry.

The full details of a payment of $250 million to the Los Angeles diocese – one of four to borrow from AIB – are contained in Berry’s explosive new book which chronicles the extraordinary links between the bank and the church.

The Mail on Sunday newspaper has also established that AIB lent money for abuse settlements to four separate American dioceses in 2007 and the total figure could, according to their research, be as high as $800 million.

The paper also says that "while AIB was used to pay the bulk of the Church’s abuse claims, the dioceses were able to hold on to most of their properties."

In his book, Berry claims that at least 45 of the 194 Catholic dioceses in America banked with AIB.

Berry asks: “Was AIB a pass-through for Vatican funds to help certain dioceses while others had no such advantage?”

Compensation cases have forced American dioceses to file for bankruptcy in recent years as they negotiated settlements with victims.

The Vatican however has refused to fund payments as it is fighting court cases and denying any legal responsibility to pay victims.

Now it transpires, according to the Mail, that as much as half a billion dollars was funded for American dioceses by Allied Irish Banks with the approval of its Dublin headquarters.

The money borrowed is being repaid by the American Church with at least one $40 million repayment – by the Portland diocese in Oregon - funded by borrowings from another creditor.

Portland diocese spokesman Bob Krebs refused to name the lender when contacted by the paper and claimed he did not know who put his Church in contact with Allied Irish Banks.

The Los Angeles diocese was the biggest borrower from AIB with $256 million, half of its total liability, after it opted to settle out of court with abuse victims.

The LA deals included $175m in cash and another $25m to pay the interest and helped Los Angeles avoid selling the bulk of its properties or reveal the true value of its total assets.

In San Diego, according to the Mail, AIB gave cash and credit of some $100m, almost half the $198m paid out to 144 victims.

The San Diego diocese filed for bankruptcy on the eve of the first civil trial against it in a case involving Monsignor Patrick O’Keeffe from Kilkenny.

The Diocese of Portland, in Oregon, also filed for bankruptcy because of compensation actions with $40million, from a total of $129m, funded by AIB.

The Mail also reports that U.S. lawyer Jim Stang, who sat on nine bankruptcy committees charged with looking after victim creditors, said: “We joke that AIB is the bank of the Catholic Church.”

AIB is exposed on several loans on the States. It is owed almost $10m by the diocese of Wilmington in Delaware.

An AIB spokesman said: “AIB’s business focus in America was in the ‘Not for Profit’ areas and this included churches. Any loans advanced were approved in accordance with AIB Group policy. They were standard commercial loans.”

The Los Angeles diocese has denied any involvement from the Vatican in its loan procedure with AIB.

“The allegation of Vatican involvement is complete rubbish,” said a spokesman for the LA diocese.

“The Archdiocese initiated the loan discussions with AIB and other potential lenders in the summer of 2007. An arrangement was closed with AIB in November 2007.

“Settlement related financing was undertaken as a way to allow an orderly liquidation of surplus assets by the Archdiocese, and provided time for the Archdiocese to formulate a post-settlement recovery plan.

“Financing arrangements with AIB or any other potential lender had no impact on the settlement timing or terms. The AIB loan was repaid in full during the 2011 fiscal year.”

I believe the Vatican is inherently corrupt and is without a moral compass and has been so continuously since the religious wars where the Vatican promoted killing and pillage for financial benefit. Their money laundering for the mafia with impunity in regard to the Pope and his cohorts not going to jail is criminal. It is time the World Court or some entity is involved in the prosecution of whatever legal description is appropriate.(yes I know there are legal differences such as the Holy See, the Vatican, Vatican City State et al) The world is fully aware of the duplicity of the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church in financial matters. Here is one of the latest articles as an example of the shady financial transactions of the church. "Tourists visiting Vatican City this week have experienced something decidedly non-heavenly -- they cannot use credit cards. It's cash only. The reason? No bank will process credit card transactions from the small city-state. Apparently the Vatican has not complied with European Union banking regulations that safeguard against money laundering. The Associated Press reported today that Italy's central bank blocked the electronic payments as of Dec. 31. Italian banks are not authorized to operate at the Vatican. That means that tourists in line to see the Vatican Museums were forced to carry pockets stuffed with euros to pay for entry and souvenirs, the AP reported. The Vatican Museums attract millions of visitors each year who come to see Vatican treasures, including the Sistine Chapel."
This loan from AIB - to pay abuse victims in America - prevented court scrutiny of the Los Angelese Archdiocese's abuse documents and protected the archdiocese's property.
GOD'S WORD as it is found in ECCL. 3:7: “A TIME TO KEEP SILENCE, AND A TIME TO SPEAK:” The time is come for the VOICE OF THE VICTIMS to be heard above the empty rhetoric and feigned speech of the sanctimonious and unrepentant RCC hierarchy. The time is come for the so-called “princes of the church” to hold their collective peace and give place to the VOICES OF THE VICTIMS they oppressed over decades. The time is come to expose the depraved men of the cloth in the RCC who subjected vulnerable children to a life of terror and torment, whom they abused with impunity and intimidated into SILENCE. The time is come to expose the sick and twisted Romish paedophile priests who stole their innocence and consigned them to a life of unrelenting misery, fear, & trauma, reducing them to nothing more than chattel to be passed among themselves as play things to satisfy their insatiable and depraved sexual appetites. Time to tell the world of the forgotten children, whose harrowing stories of degradation, humiliation, shame, pain, suffering and sorrow cry unto Heaven above for JUSTICE and REDRESS! Ex. 22:22-23: “Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry . . “The time has come for the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic “church” to be held accountable for their heinous crimes. High time for those who have set themselves above the law to face the full force of the law. High time for them to come clean and make a full confession of their crimes, with no “mental reservation” . . if you know what I mean. The VOICES of the VICTIMS abused by ROMAN CATHOLIC CLERICS and those who advocate for them will no longer be SILENCED! JuneAnnette
JOHNTOBIN, Roman Catholics play the anti-Catholic wildcard ad nauseum to anyone who dares to raise a voice in protest against what the Vatican itself reckons to be 1)“the worst crime”, namely the sexual abuse of children! The Roman Catholic “church” is in self-destruct mode imploding from within. It is your priests . . your bishops . . your cardinals . . your pope . . those who presumptuously call themselves "Christ's Representatives" and the “princes of the church” who have given the religion of Christ a bad name! Even the irreligious . . the professed atheist can see that the hypocritical conduct and the flagrant abuse of power exhibited by the Roman Catholic hierarchy in it's handling of the ongoing Clergy Abuse SCANDAL is wholly inconsistent with the teachings of Christ.***1)Title V of the Vatican directive/document called 'Crimens Sollicitationis' is subtitled: “THE WORST CRIME” ***EXCERPT: Title V The Worst Crime 73. “To have the WORST CRIME, for the penal effects, one must do the equivalent of the following: any obscene, external act, gravely sinful, perpetrated in any way by a cleric or attempted by him with youths of either sex or with brute animals (bestiality).” The VOICES of the VICTIMS and those who advocate for them will not be SILENCED!***In solidarity with the VICTIMS of RC Clergy Abuse, JuneAnnette
Talk about anti-catholic mass hysteria in some of the comments made here.I wonder how many are using the abuse scandals-which I admit are dreadful-as an excuse to attack and beat the church down.Just as a further point of interest the Catholic Church through its various agencies is the largest private distributor of aid and assistance in the world.
I Can see the future of the church Going Down in flames. and the vatican ignoring any wrong doing on their part saying--- Hey Guys we have nothing to do with you . you're on your own .you get no money from us. Sink or swim . Parish after parish will close. and the corruption will go on as the Vatican keeps its Head in the sand , sayin to the Parishes whats the problem ?? we see no Problems .
A NY Times article about World Youth Day, "Pope Urges Pilgrims in Spain to Stay True to Their Beliefs," reports that "the pope told those at the service, in Portuguese, that they 'will be swimming against the tide in a society with a relativistic culture, which wishes neither to seek nor hold on to the truth.'" The pope thinks that his Church seeks and holds on to the truth? I think it's ironic that his Church, which has such contempt for the world, is so expert at getting the most worldly thing the world has to offer-- money!
CATHOLICABUSESURVIVORSNI.COM--- christ said ''show me a penny'' what has this global mafia in common with the christ of the scriptures, nothing? he also said render unto caeser the things that are caesers, and unto god the things that are gods.
Thomas Doyle's Credentials:Fr Thomas Patrick Doyle OP is a renowned and outspoken advocate for church abuse victims. A Dominican priest with a doctorate in canon law and five separate master's degrees, Rev. Thomas Patrick Doyle, O.P. sacrificed a rising career at the Vatican Embassy to become an outspoken advocate for church abuse victims. Since 1984, when he became involved with the issue of sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy while serving at the Embassy, he has become an expert in the canonical and pastoral dimensions of this problem—working directly with victims, their families, accused priests, bishops, and other high-ranking Church officials. Doyle has interviewed 2,000 victims of clerical sexual abuse in the U.S. alone, and has been the only priest to testify in court in over 200 cases as to the legal liability of the Church.
AengusOg . . . SOME IN THE KNOW ARE NOT IN DOUBT AS TO THE VATICAN's CULPABILITY***Reflections from 25 Years of Experience At the Start of the New Year***Thomas Doyle, J.C.D.***Over two-thirds of the U.S. bishops have knowingly covered sexual abusers and in so doing have directly caused the ruination of the souls and often the bodies of countless more victims. The almighty Vatican, for all its carefully tooled statements of concern has not called a single bishop to accountability. A few have resigned but so what? They have committed crimes with impunity. Why? Because they are bishops and in the magical thinking of the papacy, bishops are above hard-ball justice. Some bishops have even been sexual abusers themselves. None have been defrocked. I have seen consistent, hard evidence of a radical disconnect between the mandate of Christ in the Gospel in reference to such matters, and the actual actions of the bishops and the popes. In short, the popes (JP2 and Benedict XVI) and the bishops have not acted as Christians but rather as agnostic, self-serving businessmen.***Thomas Doyle, J.C.D./ January 1, 2010

The lack of intelligence in these posts is astounding, filled with conspiracy theories that would make Oliver Stone blush. If such crazy and hateful remarks were made against blacks or Jews in the US, they would haul these folks off to an asylum. In today's Godless age where the only Gods are money, sex and power, the target will always be the Catholic church since She stands alone in opposition to the sick, dark world which we have created. The church has never been perfect or claimed to be but She has never been confused about right and wrong.
So who is then Opus Dei monkey at senior level in AIB? By the way these loans are now being talen over by an 'unnamed institution' which a fair bet would include such likely suspects as the Office of Public Works (Vatican Bank). You have to ask yourself why no US banks would touch such high risk loans to an organisation which has a track record of falling into Chapter 11 bankruptcy? And why AIB, now owned by the Irish taxpayer, was in the frame for a quarter of its US loan book to such a high risk customer? Questions need to be asked about who signed off on a single $250million loan to Los Angeles diocese in Dublin.
Although we have points of divergence as to the extent of the Vatican's culpability in the abuse of our children by the clergy, we can agree that being clerics aided the predators. It has become clear that rather than suffer the embarrassment and consequences that revelation of clerical pedophilia would cause, the church hierarchy allowed it to continue. Now, one question which needs to be answered is, did the Vatican know about this and what was done with this knowledge. The faithful seem divided at this point. There are those of us who cannot continue as though this never happened. The certitude that we cherished as Catholics has been destroyed. Others, it would seem, are intent on allowing the church to tough it out, as though pedophilia were a simple matter of well-intentioned heresy. This attitude flies in the face of the sacrament of Penance. Defense of the Faith is admirable. Defense of those who sanctioned child abuse, if only through their silence, is not.
So a bank in a predominantly Catholic country loans the Catholic Church money for whatever reason and it is a scandal? The abuse scandal was horrible. The Church had to compensate monetarily. It had to come from somewhere.
