US Airways axes service to Shannon

US Airways is no longer running services to Shannon, Ireland

US Airways has become the latest airline to pull out of Shannon with the announcement Thursday that it ending service to the western airport.

The airline said it was suspending flights from Philadelphia to Shannon, London and Birmingham in England, Milan in Italy and Stockholm in Sweden.

The company did not say when it intended to pull the service but attempts to book flights from Philadelphia to Shannon resulted in error codes on usairways.com.

The flight was a favorite for Irish people traveling home from the west coast of the U.S. and is bound to make life more difficult for travelers who live outside the Boston and New York hubs.

It is sad if aer lingus moves its base from to belfast or gatwick.I also regret if there are no direct flights from shannon to the u.s. I live only 55 miles from shannon. Johnnymack 23/11/2009
It's a sad time for the Irish people that live in the west of Ireland when the air service is being cut. I have no desire to fly to Dublin. Shannon has always been our gateway to Co kerry where we had a home for 12yrs. I will keep trying for Shannon some way. Even the Duty Free has fallen in disaray. I looked forward to my last minute shopping there. No Longer I guess.
