The friends I met here are both Irish and American, African American and Europeans who helped me through my problem with alcohol. It's ok to ask for help here as they have the resources and an open mind which lacks very much in Ireland. Did you ever think why so many young Irish commit sucide? I am not naive sweetheart! i think we need to hear the full story on this. depending on what paper you read the story changes. in one article they say the girls met the guys, went to dinner with them and voluntarily went back to the hotel room. in this story it makes it sound like date rape drugs were used and they werent fully conscious or with it in the car, yet noone found it odd that the girls went to the rooms with them? If they were conscious in the taxi and assaulted theres no way the girls would have gone to the room so they were either drugged or the taxi event reported here isnt correct. Until there is a full report from the other girl on the course of events, its hard to know how this all came down. it wont change the death of one girl but hopefully it resolves the different reports out there that dont add up and whoever did what does time for it. makes us all more conscious to stay alert, be careful who you drink with and don't let your drink out of your sight so noone can slip any crap into it.

You say in your first comment you do not think you would have sobbered up in ireland, sounds like a personnel problem to me. When you got to the states you must have met friends that do not go to pubs, you could have done the exact same in ireland sweetheart if you had friends like i do that do not go to pubs. People in the states go to the pub and stay at home and get pissed. Depends on your social life and were you live, in ireland you got pissed, in the states you did not. Many people in the states get pissed and many dont its a social thing. I was in Philadelphia once and it is rife with drugs and drunks it is one of the worse cities in the states with social problems. You both must live with blinkers on. Irishgal take a trip to miami south beach you will see drunks to the extreme, i was in the city 2 week ago and south beach was on police lockdown because of all the violence and drunks. A man had his face mauled by another man in the city this week. Then you have a major crystal meth problem in almost every state. Your husband should open his eyes a bit more at home. I travelled across the states many times, from NY, Boston, L.A, S.F, Phoenix and many more. People do drink to the extreme and the drug problem, well i wont get into that. Alcohol is a problem in Ireland as it is in the UK and the US. Alcohol consumption is down in ireland the last 3 years. Lets hope it continues. Condolences to Nicola Furlongs family. Your pain must be unbearable as no parent should have to bury a child, and sister and in such circumstances. I am a woman in my early fifties and when I was Nicolas age I was drinking and out of control. I ended up in many dangerous situations and very lucky I wasn't raped or killed while in Ireland and in US. I was very often in a black out and very seldom toward the end of my drinking days did I remember anything after the second drink. I am sober today thanks to wonderful friends in the US. I really don't think I would have sobered up in Ireland as drink is like a god along witht Irish football and hurling. I feel as a culture we are so out of control when it comes to alcohol.
