Stick it to the bigots, Traveler, you sure showed them. But you might have mentioned the "settled" irish young people in Australia. They have acquired such a reputation for being obnoxious stupid drunks that they've been kicked out of just about every bar in Sydney.

Oh yes and settled one so you
see people who actually have
money and methinks there
is a jealousy factor. :)
If you have to resort to
propaganda of a type that
used to be written in German than maybe there
is some social jealousy. Seems our new Celtic tiger is
going strong and seems some of the settled folk can't
stand it. Maybe we'll give jobs cleaning trailers.

Really "grand" rebuttals there. Oh and
where the settled people in Dublin
who backed the Easter rising in great
numbers? And as to "a great many
travelers causing trouble", the
english in London would say the exact same
thing about all Irish immigrants whether settled or travelers. And that's 1916 not 19196. Ha the settled were so afraid to stand up to the english it took an American by the name of De Valera. Too many english collaborators among the settled to make a higher judgement call.

Well, Traveler, I have known a lot of Travelers in my time going all the way back to the 1950,s. Truth be told, I have fond memories of a few of them as they were great characters. A great many, however, were not and they caused a lot of trouble and crime. This is what I saw. I am making no judgments. I know better.

I'd like to see the NY Times
try to comment about African immigrants
in Ireland in the same way.
Travelers are just an easier
target for bigotry. This
article is like nazi propaganda.

This article is a real slap in
the face. Just how many
travelers does this author
actually know? It reads like fascist
propaganda of a darker time. The gathering
is about families getting
together for Christmas and nothing to do with rhino horns or
blood feuds. I am very dissapointed that such
bigoted propganda was posted by Irish Central and the NY Times.

Pilib: I know South Carolina. What you say is nonsense. Counihan's article is just more ignorant bigotry. Change the word "traveler" to "Nigerian" and hear the howls of protest if he published this article.

This is why people need to be
valued for their labor and legal
skills versus the amount of
money they are able to accumulate.

I believe that the biggest concentration of Travelers in the U.S. is in Murphy Village, South Carolina.

This story brings back memories when working the Alcan Alumina site in the Shannon estuary for the Chicago bridge Co back in early eighties,we used drive through Rathkeale and the Mc Mansions were evident all over the outskirts of this town with motor homes and top of the range jeeps every where,we were led to believe they were legit wheeler/dealer merchants who plied their trade all over the world, but i think most people knew they were scam artists who were just very good at what they were doing.
