Irish Travellers have again staged their annual version of The Gathering – and descended on the Limerick town of Rathkeale.

The travelling community regard Rathkeale as their spiritual home according to a new report in the New York Times.

The paper says that hundreds of families return to Rathkeale every Christmas from all across the globe.

Some use the trip home to stage fairytale weddings and christenings.

Others, according to the report, say that old scores have to be settled as armed police patrol the streets in a bid to prevent outbreaks of violence.

The town’s population of 1,500 will swell to 4,500 for the Christmas holidays with expensive cars and trailer homes on view.

The report says: “A long history of violence between clans hangs like a cloud over the travellers. When they congregate at Christmas, brawls involving knives, cudgels, iron bars and screwdrivers have been known to erupt, and traffic violations multiply. Last year alone, the police seized 30 vehicles for various offenses.”

Many of the travellers have bought or built houses in Rathkeale in the last decade.

The majority of the houses remain boarded up during the year but burst into life over the festive holiday season.

The New York Times alleges that some of the property deals have been funded by money laundering schemes.

One resident told the paper: “People won’t say a bad word against them in public because they’re afraid of getting a bottle through the window or something a lot worse.

“Who really believes tarring driveways or fixing gutters gets you those massive houses or flashy cars?”

Travellers with links to Rathkeale have been involved in major news stories in recent years including the recent jailing of four men and a woman in Britain for enslavement.

British police believe the family involved own property in Rathkeale.

The New York Times says that others with Rathkeale connections have been jailed for various offenses from Australia to Iceland, including smuggling and handling counterfeit goods. In 2010, two men were caught trying to buy illegal black rhino horns from undercover federal agents.

Edward Grace from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service told the paper: “The agency expects more indictments of members of the Rathkeale Irish Traveller group.

“These Irish Traveller gang members are the middlemen in the operation that also involves Chinese and Asian gangs.

“They have access to large amounts of cash to buy the horns, and they have the network to sell them on at exorbitant prices. Some people will say, ‘What’s the harm here? These animals are already dead.’ But they are fuelling an illegal trade and that means more incentive to kill endangered species.”

Grace added that rhino horns fetch about $5,000 a pound in the United States but are worth $25,000 a pound by the time they get to Asia where they are ground down to make potions with unproved medicinal benefits and perceived aphrodisiacal qualities.

Thank you :) Sláinte
Stick it to the bigots, Traveler, you sure showed them. But you might have mentioned the "settled" irish young people in Australia. They have acquired such a reputation for being obnoxious stupid drunks that they've been kicked out of just about every bar in Sydney.
Oh yes and settled one so you see people who actually have money and methinks there is a jealousy factor. :) If you have to resort to propaganda of a type that used to be written in German than maybe there is some social jealousy. Seems our new Celtic tiger is going strong and seems some of the settled folk can't stand it. Maybe we'll give jobs cleaning trailers.
Really "grand" rebuttals there. Oh and where the settled people in Dublin who backed the Easter rising in great numbers? And as to "a great many travelers causing trouble", the english in London would say the exact same thing about all Irish immigrants whether settled or travelers. And that's 1916 not 19196. Ha the settled were so afraid to stand up to the english it took an American by the name of De Valera. Too many english collaborators among the settled to make a higher judgement call.
Well, Traveler, I have known a lot of Travelers in my time going all the way back to the 1950,s. Truth be told, I have fond memories of a few of them as they were great characters. A great many, however, were not and they caused a lot of trouble and crime. This is what I saw. I am making no judgments. I know better.
YES AND WHERE IS ALL THE MONEY COMING FROM ?? THEY DONT WORK AND YET ALL DRIVE RANGE ROVERS AND LIVE IN BIG HOUSES .. LETS FACE IT ALOT OF THESE ARE THE MODERN DAY DRUG DEALERS OF IRELAND AND THEY MAKE ME SICK....
cultural diversity in full flower... do social studies textbooks over ther tout travellers sufficiently as additions to the richness of the cultural fabric?
As my cousin, the garda, asks when he picks up a traveller for fighting...where was your ones back in 19196...I don't remember seeing any {insert surnamne} in the history books.
I'd like to see the NY Times try to comment about African immigrants in Ireland in the same way. Travelers are just an easier target for bigotry. This article is like nazi propaganda.
This article is a real slap in the face. Just how many travelers does this author actually know? It reads like fascist propaganda of a darker time. The gathering is about families getting together for Christmas and nothing to do with rhino horns or blood feuds. I am very dissapointed that such bigoted propganda was posted by Irish Central and the NY Times.
Pilib: I know South Carolina. What you say is nonsense. Counihan's article is just more ignorant bigotry. Change the word "traveler" to "Nigerian" and hear the howls of protest if he published this article.
This is why people need to be valued for their labor and legal skills versus the amount of money they are able to accumulate.
I believe that the biggest concentration of Travelers in the U.S. is in Murphy Village, South Carolina.
This story brings back memories when working the Alcan Alumina site in the Shannon estuary for the Chicago bridge Co back in early eighties,we used drive through Rathkeale and the Mc Mansions were evident all over the outskirts of this town with motor homes and top of the range jeeps every where,we were led to believe they were legit wheeler/dealer merchants who plied their trade all over the world, but i think most people knew they were scam artists who were just very good at what they were doing.
Some story....
