More lazy sub-editing. The man fell into the Royal Canal, not the Grand Canal.

Sadly, I'm not suprised. The Irish have really treated their canals disgracefully, especially the one on Dublin's North Side. You see all kinds of garbage thrown in the water, the lock systems don't work, and there's nothing but weeds on the bank. Often you'll see groups of unemployed Eastern Europeans sitting around and drinking cheap vodka. Instead of being a real amenity for the Irish citizen, the canals of Dublin are dirty, depressing and dangerous.
