Immigrants who entered the U.S. by way of Ellis Island were required to meet all the requirements of the immigration laws -no criminal records, no contageous diseases or physical disabitities. In the late 50s I received my permanest visa at the U.S. embassy in Dublin at the age of 18 - with the understanding that I would register with the Draft Board within 6 months. I was required to carry my green card at all times, including the 4 years I served in the Marine Corps. Whether emigrants from Ireland came thru Ellis Island or Idlewild Airport, we complied with the laws and made contributions to our adopted country.
