A top hotelier has said that Ireland no longer offers tourists a "hundred thousand welcomes."

A top hotelier has claimed that Ireland has lost the ability to offer tourists a "hundred thousand welcomes" and challenged the government to sort out the tourism industry.

Peter Malone, the man who turned the Jurys group into one of Ireland’s most successful hotel brands, told a Clare conference that the Irish brand is slipping fast.

The government and tourism bodies Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland all got it in the neck from Malone when he addressed a conference on the state of Irish tourism in County Clare.

“We have lost the friendliness that we became famous for,” Malone told delegates to the meeting.

“Staff don’t say please, don’t say thank you. The little touches that I learned all over the years in Jury’s, they’re gone.

“You get into a lift in any hotel, staff won’t even say good morning or good evening to you.

“Go into a shop, go into a post office, go in anywhere, we snarl at people.”

Malone then issued an ominous warning for the Irish hospitality industry as the government looks to tourism to help lead the economy out of recession.

He warned: “Unless we stop the rot soon and improve training and standards in our country, the friendliness will not return. We have a long way to go.

“The prices charged to tourists also need to change. Food in restaurants and bars are at unreal prices. Even a cup of tea or coffee is often $3 or more.

“Take your children out now at your peril as they are charged just as much.”

The former Jurys Hotel chief also called on Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar to merge Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland.

“There is great confusion all over the country in the tourism sector as to who is doing what job and the industry has become frustrated,” he said.

“When we had the one agency, Bord Failte, it was much better. Minister Varadkar is really keen on cutting back on quangos and this is an ideal thing to do now to put everyone back into one tourism body.”

I travel this country extensively and regularly and I have no complaints. I travel alone and Ive never had any negative experiences with anyone or any place. Maybe its just irish people and Polish really dont like Americans all that much??
Staff arent Irish, thats the problem!
I think it's because hotel staff in Ireland no longer speak English. And they wern't speaking Irish either. If I wanted Polish hospitality, I would have stayed home in Chicago! However, I did stay overnight in a hotel in Galway city this summer and the Irish staff were lovely, even to the rude American guy. I've noticed over the years that Aer Lingus staff aren't quite as friendly as before but still leaps and bounds ahead of their American flying counterparts.
Is that old geezer greensod gone? Wow, that's a relief. Air seems fresher already.
Georgedillion; So Long,I hope you find what ever it is you are looking for!
Oh I see, Greensod. You were involved in importing multiculturalism into Vietnam? Out of the muzzle of a gun? That explains the fact that you just don't get indigenous cultures and want to flatten every example of local tradition. You sure weren't in Vietnam protecting my rights, you jerk. And I'm proud of my late father who made sure he never joined in that murderous stupidity and did all he could to stop it. You call yourself an "old dog". You're not, you're just an old racist fool.
havent been back for a while, realy like to,i miss it,cant believe that irish people arent friendly or welcoming, mind you,i saw a lot of the old ireland die once the eu was entered into and the rotten drug scene came in,money greed and drugs,it changed and not for the better.then the economy was built on greed and a housing bubble, perhaps people are just preoccupied and worried about an uncertain future..i hope it changes.
Peter Malone, the right person to comment on damage to Irelands tourism image? Indeed? After all he is Chairman of the National Roads Authority who brought the tolled M3 motorway to the Tara landscape. Check out what the NRA did - Seamus Heaney speaking on BBC called it a desecration of Tara. How many potenitial tourists were lost by the action of the NRA and Meath Council - when a shorter more direct route west of Tara was possible? Malone is also heavily involved in real estate and property development - Chairman of CBRE Gunne Property Group.
Georgedillon; I forgot, a simple apology will be just fine,it just might get you back some creditability
Georgedillon; There you go again with the insults and attacks. Why would you call Sirpeter and I liars.Your lack of knowledge about Ireland or anything Irish would suggest to me that it is a subject you should stay clear of.My preception of your comments reminds me what the big fish said to the little fish, had we kept our mouths shut we would never have got caught. If you dont understand that, have someone explain it to you.You said I have never been out of Ireland. A CARA, I left Ireland when the pound sterling was in use there.Since you have appointed yourself and expert on all things, possibly you could enlighten me on DA NANG,QUI Nohn, The ho Trail, I may have missed something while I was there protecting your rights to express your opinion reglardless of how foolish you project yourself.Your reference to Killarney would suggest to me, that you are what we real Irish call a narrow back. All the narrow backs go to the tousist traps and of course kiss the big rock in Kerry.A Cara I could take you to pubs and private houses in parts of Ireland you have never heard of,where you can hear some of the best Irish music on the planet.Places where songs are sung that have never been put on paper. No Americans within miles to be served by Polish bartenders.I have built, opened, and operated hotels in 15 different states across America including the Bahamas and St Kitts.I served my apprentiship as a bar tender in a very popular Pub In a Town in Ireland.Sirpeter is wise to you, so am I, and I will retract nothing. If you still think I am naive, then next time you will just have to join up and protect your own rights to have the right to free speach. You are of course entitled to your opinion, but not your own facts. That privilage is reserved for the old dogs who travelled the hard road.
nosoupforu; Looks like we were addressing two different issues, looks like both points are valid. Sorry for the mix up.
Greensod my answer to your last post to me was either deleted or not posted but I'll try a short one again, about working in Mexico BUSINESSES ARE NOT THE SAME AS IMMIGRANTS (unwelcome ones at that)
Greensod: Will you retract your outrageous claim that American tourists in Ireland don't care whether their barman in Killarney just flew in from Gdansk, or their tour guide just got off the plane from Moldova. Have you ever even been outside Ireland, Greensod, you sound really narrow-minded and naive.
sirpeter: "Traditional Irish music sessions are everywhere". Why do you lie so much? Is it something you inherited from your parents, or did you develop it yourself? You're a damn liar, because traditional Irish music sessions are NOT everywhere in Ireland. Indeed you could stay in countless towns and not hear a note of a fiddle for weeks. Readers don't have to believe me on this--though they would do well to do so. Various columnists and posters on this site have written about how difficult it was for them to find traditional Irish music in Ireland. The fact that shills such as sirpeter and greensod lie about this means only that they are liars, nothing more. In fact Greensod's ideal Irish hotel pipes Eastern European musak into the bar, where there's a Russian girl and a Polish man serving to a handful of depressed Americans who are wondering why they saved their money for months in order to vacation in Warsaw on the Liffey. It's shills like you who have lost Ireland millkions of tourist dollars, greensod. But you prefer to try and underpay some unfortunate Pole or Russian.
greensod.Georgie Boy is an American born hybrid idiot boy.Under no circumstances does he represent the Irish in anything. Also you would be incorrect to state the craic in Irish pubs no longer exists.Hotels don't do fun.The pensioner Yanks and the 10pm go-to-bed Germans kick up a fuss if they don't get their 8 hours sleep.Traditional Irish music sessions are everywhere.Next time you are in Ireland.Look up the local paper or ask someone who knows. You're just not in the right pubs.
