Guinness is good for Irish tourism – but not for the Queen of England or so it seems.
The Queen and Prince Phillip have declined to sample a pint of Dublin’s finest Guinness at the city’s landmark brewery.
The English monarch had the ‘perfect pint’ poured by master brewer Fergal Murray at the Guinness Hop Store on Thomas Street.
But not a drop passed the lips of the most famous tourist in Dublin as she declined to indulge in Ireland’s favorite past-time unlike so many of her loyal subjects who flood Temple Bar every weekend.
Guinness expert Murray – aided and abetted by RTE’s Ryan Tubridy who acted as her majesty’s host on the whistle stop brewery – tried his best to cross the regal lips with the black stuff.
But the Queen decided it was too early in the morning to run the risk of alcohol impairing her judgment in a packed schedule for the second day of her state trip.
Not even a master class in the art of Guinness brewing by Murray – who stopped short of revealing the firm’s trademarked secrets – could persuade the Queen to try a tipple.
Instead Prince Phillip enquired: “Is it made with Liffey water?”
Murray is reported to have replied: “It is pure and pristine from the Hills.”
The Queen did visit the Gravity Bar at the Guinness Brewery for a breathtaking view of the Dublin skyline when Tubridy acted as her host.

I wouldnt drink it and I live beside the Guinness brewery but I do love the smell of hops from it every Tuesday.
Schiltax | May 23, 2011, 08:32 PM EDT
No one's been able to make me eat or drink anything I didn't want to since I was in graded school......
sirpeter | May 22, 2011, 03:48 PM EDT
kateomprint..verbatim!! *Whispers. I copied and pasted what you said.
Towngate | May 21, 2011, 03:34 AM EDT
I was particularly amused at this failed Irish attempt to subsume the Royals into it's appalling alcohol 'culture'.
kateomprint | May 20, 2011, 04:58 PM EDT
sirpeter you obviously do read them because you were able to quote it verbatim.

@MarthaAnne,Come to yer senses lass!
MarthaAnne | May 20, 2011, 09:32 AM EDT
ciarrai, who wrote: " Short of blowing them up I would not have them in Ireland. F**k them." Your statement is beyond disgusting.
roibaird | May 20, 2011, 05:27 AM EDT
holy jaysuS!! Her Highness wouldnt be first woman to refuse a pint of the black stuff .......and certainly wont be the last one! so whats the idiot who wrote that article on about?
Niamhaine | May 20, 2011, 04:27 AM EDT
They came, they listened, they were polite...I really can't picture the Queen hefting a pint glass anywhere in public. And the pint didn't go to waste, as soon as the royals departed a priest walked over and scarfed it up. Yep, it's a mortal sin to leave a pint untouched-LOL.
slainte39 | May 19, 2011, 08:07 PM EDT
Going a little off topic...but what happens if the Scots opt for independence? Would that give the North three options for alignment...UK, Republic, or Scotland? Maybe they could convince the Welsh to break away and form a new country and call it the "wee two". Another pint and more speculation.
ciarrai | May 19, 2011, 06:58 PM EDT
Phillip was annoying me with the yucks while your man is trying to explain the stuff to Liz and him. What an embarrassing stop that was. Liz couldn't have cared less. Liz and Phill's visit was for what reason? The Irish have certainly lowered their standards. Short of blowing them up I would not have them in Ireland. F**k them.

How Rude!
DaithiSuibhne | May 19, 2011, 04:06 PM EDT
Perhaps shes been monitoring IC postings and read the one I posted about bringing her food taster with her, I suppose he/she must have been in the toilet when she was offered that pint.
sirpeter | May 19, 2011, 04:00 PM EDT
kateomprint..I think you should read the headline of the article first and then my posts slowly until they sink in.Quote"sirpeter i am of an age where I can still hold a pint if i wanted to but I don't like the stuff. Can you not see it for what it was just a gesture"Unquote. Where exactly did my post refer to YOU not been able to hold a pint? By the way IC asked me my opinion on this article. But Katie guess what? You don't have to read my comments. I don't read yours.

Maybe she's a Pioneer!!!!!

The Queen visited Ireland because she was invited. She could have refused. That would have looked good wouldn't it. It's called bridge building amongst other things. Make no mistake, what happened in the past is unforgiveable, and I hope the perpetrators are rotting in hell. When I read the history, about massacres, and the famine, and when I think of people in the north torn apart from their heritage, I feel sick with anger, grief and sadness. But what is to be gained by continuing to hate? So much more will be achieved by friendship and unity, and by accepting that there are people who feel genuine remorse for the actions of their ancestors. And in time, the 26 will become 32 again. Until then, as long as nationalists there are treated with respect and have equality, we can be patient. Too many innocent people have died.
mairdemalone | May 19, 2011, 01:58 PM EDT
Too early for a pint of Guinness! Good for her! (The queen, unlike her hubby -who would have enjoyed downing several pints if he'd been there without the entourage- and most of her family, especially Charles' wife, now only drinks in the afternoon. Does she still smoke? Or has she given up smoking too.) Guinness' probable sent a barrel of stout to the Queen's residence. But I have to add: I would like to know why did the Queen's visit Ireland? She is going to bail out the Irish Government? Is she going to buy Ireland this tme, instead of taking it? What load of Upper Class snobbery! Give me Liberty! And while you're at it, throw in a pint of Harp lager with a little Canadian ginger ale and a slice of lemon and lime. Yummy, yummmy And call it a Commonwealth Shandy for the shagged!
clevelander | May 19, 2011, 01:46 PM EDT
@FastEddy That inbreed german/english non-celtic women is nothing to me. She never was and never will be anything to me!!!
FastEddy | May 19, 2011, 01:29 PM EDT
You guys are looking for any slight mis-step from The Queen. Get over it, She is your Queen, too. FYI: Her security escort would never let Her drink a free beer from anyone in any case, nor would Her protocol advisors.
iamdiva | May 19, 2011, 01:18 PM EDT
I'd love a chance to visit the Guinness Brewery and try a perfect pint myself. Sounds delightful! If the Queen doesn't want it, then more for us who do! :)
MarkMary73 | May 19, 2011, 12:30 PM EDT
Hey, the Queen is in good company; Michael Collins didn't favor Guinness either!
Boozwatch | May 19, 2011, 11:46 AM EDT
Obviously the Queen doesn't drink Guinness, but Pres. Obama is also avoiding the beer in Ireland by bringing his own barrel on his trip to Moneygall next week (more on Gargle Nation). Is it the fact that alcohol is poisonous that troubles them, or are they worried about terrorists putting something extra in the pint? Irish people might be offended that home security is not trusted, but it shows the sad state of affairs that leaders of 'democratic' countries have to fear poisoning by ordinary people like Roman emperors before them. Queen does seem to be enjoying the visit though.
Sparklet | May 19, 2011, 11:19 AM EDT
It would have been nice if she'd taken a sip, but can't say I blame her. It makes me feel ill. I think a younger Royal would have done so - almost certain Kate would have.
pounder | May 19, 2011, 10:40 AM EDT
Didn't want to leave a tip I suppose, the cheap bastards.
badolan | May 19, 2011, 10:28 AM EDT
At their age, they are probably on all kinds of medications that don't mix well with alcohol. It sure looked like they wanted some regardless.
deburca | May 19, 2011, 10:01 AM EDT
They were dying for a taste, especially Philip you can see it in his face.
fawnmarie | May 19, 2011, 09:52 AM EDT
Why would anyone drinking in Dublin be considered a "loyal subject" of QEII? Seriously.
suzandpej | May 19, 2011, 09:47 AM EDT
I am sure that you welcomed her well! Congratulations! Poor Sirpeter...jealousy turns many people sour. Give him no more thought. This is a classy lady. She seems to be enjoying herself!
carrickcourt | May 19, 2011, 09:28 AM EDT
Guinness is good for you but perhaps not right after a good Irish breakfast.
kateomprint | May 19, 2011, 08:42 AM EDT
sirpeter i am of an age where I can still hold a pint if i wanted to but I don't like the stuff. Can you not see it for what it was just a gesture. You really are the most opionated man ever to walk in shoe leather and sometimes you even get it wrong IMAGINE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sirpeter | May 19, 2011, 08:15 AM EDT
@kateomprint. I know he was showing them how a pint should be pulled.I don't know how old you are but I can tell you now women of her generation never drink out of a pint glass. They consider it unladylike. Also at her age most eighty year old women don't have the power to grip and hold a full pint of Guinness. So I see nothing wrong in her refusing it. By the way If you are not a West Brit fine never said you were. But there is plenty West Brits in Dublin and a good few on this site as well.
ellenfromcork | May 18, 2011, 07:46 PM EDT
I'll be glad to have the pint she refused when I'm there again.
kateomprint | May 18, 2011, 05:04 PM EDT
sirpeter he his not a thick idiot he is showing her how the perfect pint should be pulled. Whats wrong with you. We don't like being called West Brits because we are not.
sirpeter | May 18, 2011, 03:13 PM EDT
The thick idiot behind the bar pulls a pint and puts it in front of her.He should have had a half pint glass ready. What elderly woman drinks out of a pint glass. Those Dublin west brits have no etiquette. They haven't a clue.
Towngate | May 18, 2011, 02:06 PM EDT
Kilsally: well said! ~ and the greater part cleverly left unsaid! ~ and I'll just add that we should remember she is staying at Farmleigh House ~ built by the Guinness Family.
citizen69 | May 18, 2011, 01:48 PM EDT
The Queen has some Scottish blood, so i can't believe she passed up a free pint! :)
Kilsally | May 18, 2011, 01:03 PM EDT
Perhaps she is Tee total. Ah Sir Arthur Guinness the great Unionist, Conservative & Protestant Irishman.
CanadianPat | May 18, 2011, 12:05 PM EDT
They refused as they were afraid they might have to pay!P.S. Phillip is said to be a mean drunk and Lizzy is just mean!!!
Hannah1879 | May 18, 2011, 11:27 AM EDT
Also, I noticed that Prince Phillip kept on backing away from the bar? It was almost funny...why would he do that except he was obviously afraid of something. Kind of pathetic.
Hannah1879 | May 18, 2011, 11:24 AM EDT
I think it would have been a great gesture for them both to take a sip and compliment the person giving it to them. But no they didn't. That's really unfortunate, I think it would have been very classy. But, instead they listened to the gentlemen like he was a circus clown instead of taking him seriously on how this wonderful drink is made. Some people will never get it.
personal | May 18, 2011, 11:22 AM EDT
Old girl never drink on duty. Anytime she has a 'sip' she gets wild, lets her hear down and is physically violent. It's better to ignore a good pint than to s**t around. I'm open to challenge, happy to be corrected
irishwriter | May 18, 2011, 11:01 AM EDT
They should have thrown it in her face!!! Why didn't she take an obligatory sip just to be a good sport???? Leaving a perfect pint on the bar is unforgivable. I thought this was a fence-mending trip???
