The Irish Government’s response in full to Vatican Statement

What Enda Kenny’s Department told the Holy See

The full text of the Irish government’s response to the Vatican statement on the Cloyne Report is as follows:

The Government of Ireland thanks the Holy See for its response of September 3rd regarding the report of the Commission of Investigation into the Catholic Diocese of Cloyne (the Cloyne report) and the representations made to it by the Tánaiste in this regard in his meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio on July 14th, 2011.

The Government acknowledges and welcomes the statement in the response that the Holy See is sorry and ashamed for the terrible sufferings which the victims of abuse and their families have endured. The victims of abuse and their families must remain foremost in our considerations.
Having considered carefully the Cloyne report and the response of the Holy See, the Government of Ireland remains of the view that the content of the confidential letter in 1997 from the then apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Storero, to the Irish bishops, regardless of whether or not it was intended to do so, provided a pretext for some members of the clergy to evade full co-operation with the Irish civil authorities in regard to the abuse of minors. This is a matter of great concern to the Irish Government.

_______________

The Government of Ireland notes the comments in the Holy See’s response on the political debate which ensued in Ireland after the publication of the Cloyne report and in particular the statements made by the Taoiseach and other political leaders.

The Government of Ireland must point out that the comments made by the Taoiseach and other political leaders accurately reflect the public anger of the overwhelming majority of Irish people at the failure of the Catholic Church in Ireland and the Holy See to deal adequately with clerical child sexual abuse and those who committed such appalling acts.

It is the Government of Ireland’s hope that, in spite of outstanding differences, lessons have been learned from appalling past failures. In this regard, it welcomes the commitment in the concluding remarks of the Holy See’s response to a constructive dialogue and co-operation with the

Government. In welcoming this commitment the Government expects the fullest co-operation from the Holy See, the Catholic Church in Ireland and all other relevant bodies with a view to ensuing that Ireland is a society fully safe for children and minors and that all of those with responsibility for the welfare and care of children in this country are fully subject to Irish laws and requirements.

I cannot tell you how proud I am of the Irish government for taking this stand and being willing to stand up to the Vatican and say No more! I believe we are witnessing historic events, both in Ireland and other countries, that will eventually lead either to the reform of the RCC or its ultimate demise.
Amen to that, couldn't agree more with the Irish government. Let us stand up and be counted, this was a disgrace twice, the fact that it happened and then the cover-ups and the attitude. Fall on your knees and ask for forgiveness not try to the get the monetary settlement out of poor church goers. I have broken with the church, I will talk to God directly.
In reading Michael Jecks historical novels set in the 1300's, and often touching on the clergy of that time, the protection of their own at the expense of the public is a solidly rooted weed in an otherwise seemingly beautiful garden. It is hard to believe that much will change no matter the lip-service given at present. As parents, it falls on us to arm our children with the independence of spirit, clear reasoning abilities and knowledge of the evils about them so that they can fight back.
The Vatican is systematically discarding its only asset. It's faithful. In America there are already at least two healthy schism churches, the Reformed Catholic Church and the Ecumenical catholic Communion, who have grown tired of waiting for the church establishment to break free of the hypocritic, narcissistic, self-serving behavior that promoted the Taoiseach's Cloyne speech. How long do you think it will be before there is an Irish schism, in that place where early Christianity was vibrant, all-inclusive and true to the real word of Christ?
The church missed a golden opportunity that when the child abuse scandals hit, they should have immediately acknowledged their damage, apologized to those damaged, assisted in the criminal prosecution of those responsible, and then overhauled the total structure of the church, including expanding the clergy to women and married men and women. The resulting tidal wave of surprise and relief would have shifted the opinion of the church from that of a predator to a religious organization looking hopefully and productively to the future. Throughout history, such strategic mistakes have destroyed organizations.
Compare this stalemate to what's happening elsewhere. From thetablet.co.uk online: "The Church [in Austria] has been in turmoil since more than 300 priests led by Mgr Helmut Schüller called for disobedience on matters such as priestly celibacy and Communion for remarried divorcees (see The Tablet, 9 July). Having told the members of the Austrian Priests’ Initiative on 10 August that he could not allow their call to be left as it stood, and that they should back down or leave the Church, Cardinal Schönborn gave the priests time to 'reflect' before a second meeting, behind closed doors, planned for 10 September." --> The Austrian Priests' Initiative, a reform movement, now has 400 priests and 12,000 involved supporters, and it seems likely that its agenda will lead to schism in Austria if the Vatican remains unyielding. The aricle mentions that "the latest poll ... shows that 76.5 per cent of Austrians back the Initiative." In a separate editorial, the Tablet says that this movement is powerful because it is speaking truth: "They are right that what Catholics hunger for, and not just in Austria, is a Church of integrity, without hypocrisy, doublespeak or pathological denial. That is surely what the joyful young Catholics in Madrid were seeking too. A Church which can only function with its blind eye turned permanently to the telescope, seeing only what is convenient to see, is not in good shape." The reform movement in Ireland also continues to grow, along with the new association of reform priests in the USA that the Irish priests inspired.
There is no evidence in my mind that they are making many changes. just recently a priest from Minnesota left and went to India to be with the children. of course he has been found guilty of raping a young woman and of course will not come back to face the music. I doubt highly that the pope will intervene and say go back.
Br wary, be very wary.
The curtain, unfortunately, has not closed on this episode. There will be more disclosures of cover-ups and more heinous abuses of children by clergy. Until RCC initiates and carries out thorough reforms, people can have but little confidence that their children will be safe with clergy or that bishops will deal honestly with the laity. What has changed, really, in the structure of the Church? What has changed in canon law, which protects the "good name" of priests at the cost of justice for victims of priests?
Bravo! is right. The show is over, and curtain has closed on an ugly and tragic episode in the life of the Church and the people, never to be repeated. The fight against greed, materialism, poverty, addiction, and disease should take its rightful place at the center of the stage. The limelight should be on those of God's people who are making the world a better place.
Bravo!
