A nationwide survey conducted in Ireland reveals that 1 in 10 people plan to emigrate in the coming year.
If that were to come through, an estimated 200,000 working age Irish people would quit the country, showing emigration levels that have not been since since the 1950s.
In the survey, which was commissioned by lastminute.com and carried out by the market research company, iReach, 9% of all respondents said they planned to move abroad in 2011.
Of those respondents, 35% cited lack of work as the main reason they were planning to leave.
In the 18-24 year old age group, 27% said they would emigrate in within 12 months, but 56% percent of these claim they are doing so for “travel and adventure,” rather than economic necessity.
Of the males, 11% said they’re primary reason for emigrating is “for love,” while only 5% of females claimed this as their reason.
There is a huge discrepancy between how young and old view the future.
Of the 18-24 year olds, 74% are eagerly awaiting the new year, but only 58% of those aged 45-54 are looking forward to 2011.
A random selection of 1,000 people were polled nationally on Thursday, December 9, 2010.

once we're kicked out of the Euro, revert back to a weaker currency, it will be far cheaper for yous Stateside to have vacations here. And not forgetting the 300,000 odd empty new housing units lying idle, some of yous may be tempted to buy them up to Retire in. Now if only there will be an innovative economic breakthrough leading to a reverse-Diaspora..(Biofuel the Rushes for starters, ha ha)

Peterson you have 1/2 that right..they will be back to visit but couldn't afford to stay and live..this country is eating everyone out of house and home...at one time it was healthy but greed got in the way... and they priced themselves right out of the tourest coming for a visit..and most of Irelands buisnesses don't want to budge in cutting prices because there is no competition ..so yes people will be leaving ..especially the youth...and look out Ireland because in a few years there will be soooo many blow-in's from other countries that no one will know who is Irish or NOT.!!!!HhhhMmmm

I think that it will be like the fifties again, 400,000 for the first couple of years.

I can feel georgyboys butthurt all the way over here. Its apparent to me now that the angst he express's regarding immigration into Ireland by foreign nationals stems from the fact that in his little corner of America integration has failed.I can only conclude that georgyboys hood was once predominately aryan caucausian and now it is not.I note he left out Poles this time.

This is just fantasy and wishful thinking. If one in ten left the country that would be the equivalent of maybe 300.000 adults--that's not going to happen. Anyway, what's the problem? Every Irish person who leaves is being replaced by an Indian, Arab, Bangladeshi, African, Chinese etc. It'll be a much more interesting country when all the Irish have either left or died off. It'll be like the United Nations!
