Thank You Seanmor for Your service to the corps. Semper Fi.
The former bus driver supposedly sending back $900 (£569) a month wasn't sending that to Ireland, £569 is British currency, not Irish.
These people aren't the responsibility of the Irish Government or the Irish taxpayer. Tony Gallagher died alone in the self proclaimed "Irish American" neighborhood of Sunnyside, Queens, not Ireland. He had gone to the US decades ago and was legally a US citizen. Whoever is trying to get money from Ireland for this is just trying to use Ireland for their own gain.
The vast majority of ederly Irish natives who have lived for long in New York and other U.S. cities have never sought help from any government agency and most have faithfully attended their parish church, to which they have continually made generous contributions. Yet, few if any goverorment or church officins care the least about them. In the case of elderby male Irish natives, many have honorably served in the nation's defense forces and may not be aware of V.A. benefits to which they are entitled. As a formwer marine who honorably served 4 years in the Corps,I discovered in 1999 that I'm considered a Vietnam Era vetran and therefore entitled to health care at Veterans hospitals. Sometimes those who contribute the most expect the least.
