A powerful American politician has asked Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny to call a halt to plans to erect a statue to Communist guerilla leader Che Guevara in Galway.

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, chairwoman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, has personally asked the Irish leader to intervene in a row over the proposed memorial.

City bosses in Galway have disputed all claims that the statue, set to be erected near the famous Eyre Square in honour of Guevara’s roots in Ireland, is an insult to American tourists. Guevara’s grandmother Anna Isabel Lynch was born in Galway.

They have also rejected suggestions from home and abroad that any such statue would damage the tourism industry in the West.

Several American politicians have disagreed however and Cuban American Ros-Lehtinen is leading the charge against the statue.

In a personal letter to the Irish government leader Kenny, she expresses her many concerns at the project.

“I am concerned regarding the proposal by the city council of Galway to build a monument in honour of Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara and respectfully request that the Government of Ireland instead lend its support to and honour the enslaved Cuban people who seek to be free from the dictatorship that Che helped impose upon them,” she wrote.

“I ask you to note that in the eyes of the Cuban community in the United States, Che Guevara was a mass murderer and a human rights abuser.

“The romanticising image that this proposed monument portrays would serve to diminish the brutality that was committed by Che.

“Now is a crucial time for responsible nations to stand in solidarity with one another in order to protect universal human rights and demonstrate their support for democracy in Latin America.

“I ask that your government honour the victims of Che and the Castro dictatorship by rejecting this proposal.”

Republican congressman Mario Diaz Balart, a niece of Castro’s first wife, has also condemned the proposal.

“This is a celebration of a murderous executioner who revelled in the murder of men women and children in cold blood,” she said.

The Irish Prime Minister may be embarrassed by the statue project as one of its main supporters in Galway is Councillor Billy Cameron, a member of the Labor Party currently in government with Kenny’s Fine Gael.

Businessman and former presidential election candidate Declan Ganley is against the plan. “The statue is completely misguided and will hit the city’s tourist industry,” said Ganley.

Ros-Lehtinen is an unusual politician. She is a major supporter of Scientology and has also been a supporter of gay rights, unsuual for a GOP member.

People seem to forget, the Mafia and a Dictator controled Cuba before Castro ran them out - and he was NOT a Communist or supported by them at the time. But, the Cuban Mafia and their relatives got our crooked politicans in Washington to oppose Castro - so he decided to get the support of the USSR - and Did. Yes, he was and is a Socialits - and so are most progressive European countries like Sweeden, Norway, Denmark. Republicans in USA are for the Rich, not the people. My relatives came from the Galawy area and if this statute is erected, my family when visiting our Irish Relatives will visit the Statute. Peace, Ed
You asked If I made a personal attack. Stiofan whats your angst????
Seanomelb, what's your point?
Stiofan I am flummoxed I did not attack you.If you are referring to odysseus A little banter is hardly an attack. Who cares if odysseus never visits Galway.By his way of thinking no Irishman should visit England lest he takes umbrage to a few monuments. His reaction is puerile to say the least
Seanomelb: Why do you always make personnel attacks? You never present an opposing view to the persons statement. Of course may be there is no logical argument against the persons view!
It's rumoured that the council in Galway's next move will be to erect statue's in honour of Pol Pot & Oliver Cromwell. You can't fault them for ideological consistency !.
That John Riley statue is in Clifden, and I don't see how Americans can be against this given the pain and suffering that US Presidents and Generals have caused around the world particularly in aiding Cuban exiles to commit acts of Terrorism agains the Cuban people, look up Cuban Flight 455 and tell me that America does not support terrorism because it is a terroirst state
If there is not Stiofan there should be!! BTW it took Odysseus ten years to return from the Trojan wars maybe you should start walking now odysseus as you certainly do not have Odysseus's cunning.
Isn't there a statue of John Riley, commandant of The San Patricio Battalion (Mexico), in Galway?
if they erect it I will NEVER visit Galway
Plenty of birds in Ireland, let them take care of the statue. So many Leftist on a first name basis with Guevara, such disrespect would have been dealt with harshly, luckily he's dead and can't execute you.
Bad boy cummunist Che. He was a freedom fighter on the day, and no worse than Castro, another communist, receiving special treatment from the Vatican today, where human right issues in the name of God have been violated, not just in one country, but worldwide and covered up! Statues everywhere with no attempt to have them removed by any revolutionaries.
No one, but no one..., who is NOT a citizen of Ireland or of any country, has the right to tell any sovereign nation how to run it's own internal affairs! What arrogance! What gall! American Republican Congresspeople Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz Balart, two of the most extremist rabid rightwing exiled anti-Castro "Cuban" Americans have no business telling what statues Ireland can or can not erect! I ask ALL decent Irish citizens to TOTALLY ignore these two interloping clowns and erect the statue of Comandante de la Revolucion Cubana..., or whatever statue Ireland wants to erect! ...That's your own right as a sovereign citizen of your own country! Again, I repeat..., it's your own home and NOT of those "Cuban" Americans"! HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE! LA LUCHA CONTINUA! (TILL VICTORY FOREVER! THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!) - E.F. Mohammed Martinez - Chicano Anti-Fascist Freedom Fighter - Spear of the Aztlan National Congress
How many innocent Tories did George Washington and his thugs kill?
How can the Irish people show this kind of support to this Anti Catholic Communist. It is ludicrous. Just look at the country that he is part of.
