Sharp increase in speeding tickets on Irish roads

Roll out of new cameras results in large increase in speeding tickets

The number of Irish drivers handed down penalty points for speeding so far this year expected to surpass last year's total.

The increase follows the introduction of more than 600 privately operated speed cameras throughout Ireland.

In the first six months of this year, almost 96,000 drivers have received points on their license for speeding. The total figure for all of last year was just over 131,000. The figures emerged as a result of parliamentary question posed by Donegal Fine Gael deputy Joe McHugh.

Drivers nabbed with speeding tickets in Clare, Kerry, Longford, Limerick city and county, and Waterford city and county so far this year have already far exceeded figures for the whole of 2010.

The significant increase is being attributed to the roll-out of speed cameras, a project completed in June. The new Go Safe campaign saw speed cameras offer an additional 6,000 hours of traffic monitoring per month in more than 600 locations.

Donegal Fine Gael deputy Joe McHugh welcomed the increase but questioned the location of some of the locations of the new speed cameras.

“There is genuine concern about the locations of some of the speed vans, especially those at the entrance to lower speed zones,” he told the Irish Times. “There has been a few at entrances of towns and villages that are causing consternation.”

The old tickets were enforceable in NI. but because the speed cameras have now gone over to a for-profit private company they no longer are. So I could care less.
ciarrai - to answer your question - you're allowed to pay in dollars UNLESS you turn out to be a big name in business - then 'Irish-American relations' come into the equation. Just smile and tell them you're considering opening a factory near Limerick or Dundalk.
All 'Tourists' to our fair land must remember the only reason you are let in is to extract a much revenue from you as possible. We feed you all that baloney about heritage and pretend to like you - and you oblige us by leaving when all your money is spent. Now. If you want to 'add extras' like breaking our laws which attract monetary Penalties, then you are even more welcome! Btw: Mobile speed (trap) cameras are operated by Private companies here, who only exist by making a profit! So: It's up to you!
@ Portia777, I was thinking the same thing. This is what happens when you let private industry interfere. There has been a problem, in some parts of the US where the timing of traffic lights has been changed, un-beknownst to drivers, whereby they end up with a ticket for runnig a red light. It's a scam, but it is 'legal'. Hopefully, once people catch onto these things, sane legislation will become the law of the land, including roads, again. @ ciarrai, we got a parking ticket in Ireland, in 2005. We ended up getting billed for it by the car rental agency, months after we returned home. They charged us on our credit card, even though the Garda had said we wouldn't be fined. Oh, well, it wasn't much, though I can't remember the amount of the ticket.
Can I cop a plea if I get nabbed when there in late September to mid-October? Serious question: does anyone know what happens if I get a speeding ticket while driving my rental car with my American passport and driver's license?
they got to make money somehow.
