A German airport has filed a bid for the contract to host U.S. troops as they stop over for refueling to and from various worldwide destinations- a contract that is worth millions of dollars.

More than one million U.S. troops have gone through Shannon airport since 2006 while en route to war torn countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ireland now fears losing such a contract to the Germans.

Shannon airport, which has lost several airline contracts over the past few years, is dependant for its survival on the U.S. military contract to continue its success.

The Irish Independent reports a potential 60 percent drop could come into effect if the no-frills airline Ryanair decide to pull all its services.

Ryanair, Shannon's major operator, has now slashed its operations at the Irish airport after failing to secure a cut-price landing charges deal.

Earlier this month the airline cut its flights at Shannon by over a fifth.

Where the carrier once boasted 35 destinations in 2008, it is left with just six routes this winter.

According to the Independent, “From a high of 3.6 million passengers in 2006 and 2007, the figures decreased to 3.2 million in 2008 before dropping to 2.8 million last year.”

It is anticipated this year's figures will drop by almost half to 1.5 million.

Former SAA board member, Tadhg Kearney, said the airport does not have a future if it cannot not hammer out a deal with Ryanair.

"It (Ryanair) is the biggest low cost carrier in the world.

"There is nobody else who would come into Ireland and compete with Ryanair and deliver big numbers into Shannon which has a low population catchment area.

"Shannon needs big numbers to survive," Kearney said.

Protests against the American military in Shannon are not anti-American, that is a clear and purposeful misrepresentation of the truth. The protests were against an unjust and entirely illegal war. Those who have posted something along these lines on this thread are either deluded or ignorant of the facts.
Shannon airport authorities did this to themselves and cannot blame anyone else. Amongst many fees they have a user fee of 25 euros ($33.00)for car rentals, wheather it's a day or a month rental. They ripped off the people, let them sink.....
During the period of THE CELTIC TIGER, brought on by good goverment policies at the time, and huge investments by american corporations, we all noticed the better the Irish got finiancly, the more anti american they got. Protests at Shannon and elswhere. Well they should be happy now that no more US solders will be stopping at Shannon and they wont be able to get a cheap flight from Ryanair to Germany to protest US solders there, cause they are pulling out of Shannon too. SAD BUT TRUE..
I hope they don't close Shannon Airport. I don't see the sense in it.
If they close Shannon they need a system to get those of us who love the west coast across the country fast. When I fly into Dublin I lose two days of my vacation driving to and from Dublin. After you have done it once that is enough sight seeing of central Ireland. My trip next year has already been canceled due to the extreme high cost of the plane tickets. I and my wife were going to bring daughter, son in law and two grandchildren and the only thing that is stopping us is the 30% or more increase in plane tickets. We and Ireland lost out. Shame.
Ah well, the anti-Americanism at Shannon airport, with it's hateful, anti-American protests is to blame. As far as I'm concerned, it's good riddance to bad rubbish. Perhaps Ireland's Shannon airport can become an illegal alien hub, get a contract with Mexico to import Mexican illegals, though they'll drain your economy.
I hope they NEVER close Shannon. Whenever I go to Ireland I fly into Shannon instead of Dublin. It's a nice airport, no problems, security is great, and you're able to go on to your vacation destiny quickly so I hope it lasts forever.
I don't think Ireland can afford the luxury of having an international airport on each coast in such a small country.. So I think its time to close Shannon, It will happen anyway
