Senior psychiatrist charged with biting two police officers outside Limerick bar
Consultant lashed out and bit police officers during arrest on night out
A consultant psychiatrist has been charged with assaulting two police officers and a doorman outside Nancy Blake’s bar in Limerick last summer.
Dr Seamus O Flaithbheartaigh, 51, with an address of Caiseal Mara, At Na Coilte, Limerick, did not contest the four charges brought against him at Limerick District Court.
The court heard the doctor was in a in a “highly irate and agitated state” during the incident which took place on Denmark Street near the city centre.
O’Flaithbheartaigh is also employed as a senior clinical lecturer attached to the University of Limerick’s graduate medical school, the Limerick Leader reports.
The court heard that at around 1am on Saturday July 1, 2012, police noticed the accused in a highly irate and agitated state, as he was being restrained by several men outside the bar. When police tried to arrest the man, he bit them both, as well as a Nancy Blake’s security staff member.
The defendant was charged with assaulting a male and female garda (police officer) and the member of staff. O’Flaithbheartaigh has also been charged with intoxication in a public place on the same date. Sergeant Donal Cronin told the court that when the defendant sobered up he became very apologetic.
On Wednesday Judge Aeneas McCarthy at Limerick District Court remanded the case until April 11.
