The Queen of England will visit Croke Park today – and security chiefs fear more disturbances at the home of the GAA.
The English monarch will witness exhibition hurling and football matches at the site of the original Bloody Sunday atrocity.
British forces invaded Croke Park and killed 14 people including Tipperary player Michael Hogan on Sunday, November 21st 1920.
The Queen’s visit to Croke Park is seen as another symbolic gesture the day after she laid a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance in honor of the leaders of the 1916 Rising.

But security chiefs fear Republican sympathizers will use the Croke Park visit to mount further demonstrations against the presence of a British Queen on Irish soil.
A police spokesman said: “The level of security evident on Tuesday will continue throughout the Queen’s visit to Ireland, including her visit to Croke Park on Wednesday.”
Irish police will also maintain their high alert for protests when the Queen makes a number of other public appearances in Dublin today.
Her itinerary includes a tour of the Guinness hop store, an official visit to government buildings, a wreath laying ceremony at the Irish War Memorial Garden in Islandbridge and a state dinner at Dublin Castle.
Security was tight overnight as the Queen and her husband Prince Phillip rested at Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park.
Meanwhile, a total of 20 people were charged with public order offences after demonstrations marked the opening day of the Royal visit on Tuesday.
Police chiefs expect further disruption across a series of events on Tuesday as dissident Republicans attempt to disrupt the visit once again.
Security chiefs have repeated that peaceful protests will be facilitated, but will be positioned well back from the venues the Queen is due to visit today.
Any breaches of the peace or violent demonstrations will be met with a robust response, with the riot squad on standby.

Has the British government ever admitted responsibility? NO! Even if they did not order the shooting, they were responsible by placing the troops IN IRELAND. Have they ever made any reparations for the murders, rapes, burnings, beatings? NO! Have they ever apologized? NO!

This is the second time I've seen a comment attributed to me that I did NOT make. The comment: "Is ANYONE else sickened by the fact that all of Croke Park had to be kept EMPTY? " Was not written by me nor was it posted by me but it is attributed to me. Who is monitoring these comments and why has this happened to me two times? Has anyone else had this problem?

Dervan's article above refers to the "British Army Massacre" at Croke Park in Nov. 1920. I have seen this same reference dozens of times over the past few days, even in reputable newspapers. It is part of our heroic mythology and like so much of our history it is false. Of course to say that this was a deliberate murderous act of the British Army fits neatly into our victimhood/grievance narrative. No British soldier fired a single shot at Croke Park because no British soldier was there. The panic firing was done by the RIC and its newly attached Auxiliary Division (ADRIC). The Auxiliaries were mostly former British Army officers sent to Ireland to beef up the RIC. Their behavior appalled British and Irish alike. A majority of the RIC, outside the North, was Irish and Catholic and it did most of the shooting in Croke Park. Several official inquiries into the massacre found that (i) It was not authorized at any level of command and (ii) it was unprovoked and inexcusable. These findings were suppressed by the British government until the year 2000. In short, a number of police and "temporary constables" (the Auxies), ill-disciplined and with poor command, in a highly volatile environment (they were there to look for some of Collins' hit team who were believed to have come up from Tipperary for a special mission and were 'hiding out' as fans)and lost it. Remember, all it takes is for one guy to fire and the rest will mindlessly follow suit.

I think it is a sign of maturity to welcome the head of state of the neighbouring island to Ireland. There are some grim ghosts to be laid to rest and I appreciate that side of it. What I find annoying is the emergence of the Dublin prostitutes who slyly find ways to suggest that there should be closer political union between Westminster and Dublin. Diplomacy is fine. But that is as far as it goes. This should be seen as an effort to normalise relations and to build on the goodwill around the Good Friday Agreement but it should not be mistaken for anything else. I have seen some of the Dublin prostitutes in search of a new teat to suckle on and some of them seem to recognise an old teat. For them to assume too much out of this visit or attempt to run an agenda of their own off the back of it would be a grave mistake.

@sirpeter-Virus is right. The streets are empty of people.Like they had become vampires overnight and were hiding in the shadows till the sun went down.Or else they just increased the amount of flouride in the water. :)
Kilsally | May 18, 2011, 12:48 PM EDT
JeffGallagher - unfortuantely for security reasons you will see the same with Obama - allowing such protestors within such distances is simply too big a risk - these groups are responsible for murdering & maiming Catholic Police Officers in recent years
MarkMary73 | May 18, 2011, 12:47 PM EDT
Gerry Adams has the right of it: Mutual respect and equality. The ball is now very much in the Queen's court and she seems to be handling it adeptly. Honor--and remember--the past, but seize this opportunity for a better day and future for the people of Ireland and Great Britain.
sirpeter | May 18, 2011, 12:42 PM EDT
@antoman..No more to be said about Lizzy the Hun.Besides there is a terrible sycophantic virus up there in Dublin.
JeffGallagher | May 18, 2011, 12:17 PM EDT
"Security chiefs have repeated that peaceful protests will be facilitated, but will be positioned well back from the venues the Queen is due to visit today." Well, certainly, we wouldn't want the Queen to see how much her subjects (or her subjugated) love her, would we? The whole visit is a joke to the British played out by the Queen. I certainly hope no others are injured during her visit. She is not worth the pain.
LinLinisme | May 18, 2011, 11:43 AM EDT
The Queen is one tough woman. She is handling all this regally. She has Honor and Love.
Kilsally | May 18, 2011, 11:43 AM EDT
Daithi - no mention of the 14 others killed in Dublin by Michael Collins just prior to this? Trealach, not just by the Crown - many Irishmen were away fighting in World War 1 whilst Sinn Fein-IRA were acting like fifth columnists with their members like Sean Russell dying on German U-Boats trying to get them to invade Ireland.
DaithiSuibhne | May 18, 2011, 11:31 AM EDT
I do hope the old girl get a prime vantage point to see from where the troops opened fire on the innocents in 1920. What fun shes having.
Trealach | May 18, 2011, 11:15 AM EDT
@ kateomprint - you seem to forget that the men and women who fought for out freedom, are still considered by the Crown as 'terrorists'. An apology would give credibility and justifiable recognition for their efforts - but the Crown will never admit to wrongdoing.
antoman | May 18, 2011, 11:02 AM EDT

It says they will tolerate peaceful demonstration then why the arrest yesterday by fully riot gear equipped garda of aan older man simply taking pics. In fact, there were maybe 8 gentleman and 14 or so gardai. Not a one was really demonstrating they were photographing???

deburca | May 18, 2011, 10:37 AM EDT
antoman you seem to simply gush over the queen, which is fine and your right, but then why add the put down to the Irish Aircorps? If you're Irish and in Ireland I detect a bit of self loathing.
deburca | May 18, 2011, 10:34 AM EDT
Is ANYONE else sickened by the fact that all of Croke Park had to be kept EMPTY? Along with the streets, and God knows what else? What a sickening display of WASTE of resources in this time of economic collapse. At least SOME invited guests had the HEART to stay away...I am disgusted by this entire show of opulence and sheer out and out WASTE in the face of so many facing true proverty. Disgusted. Really, who on earth could dream that this would somehow increase tourism? It makes the Irish look like pathetic charity cases.

timbobdennehy | May 18, 2011, 09:54 AM EDT
yes antoman they may consider installing a chairlift, for people with mobility issues, who may wish to visit these sites. i like your view on irish airspace, the thought occurred to me the other day, that if a person wanted to,could use a radio controlled airplane, with some amount of explosive on it,once the maths were right. im not sure,i doubt, it would be picked up on radar, id say british security, may of covered that scenario somehow. with the idea of how would i do that, takes one to know one sort of way, understanding your enemy.
Boozwatch | May 18, 2011, 09:50 AM EDT
The Queen declined a pint of the black stuff on her Guinness Storehouse tour, and Obama is bringing his own. Has the love affair with Irish booze ended at last? Gargle Nation

Watching Ryan Tubridy showing them the sights in that glass room atop Guinness had me cringing.Tubridy is saying to Her Majesty and Philip "and if you look this way you can see a red house and look over there and you will see a green patch between two high buildings and look this way your Majesty and you can see Farmleigh House where you are staying" OH PLEASE!! Tubridy then suggests she come look at an old signiture of Arthur Guinness. She looked like she did'nt want to be there and I can't say I blame her.
kateomprint | May 18, 2011, 08:37 AM EDT
Her visit seems to be going well. She is just after apologizing for every deed/act that the British Crown ever committed. Next they'll have her apologizing for the cat getting run over on the road. I know we should not forget our past but honour these brave men/women who fought so hard for the freedom that we enjoy today but can we have it please without the bitterness and hatred. It would make their fight so much worthwhile
antoman | May 18, 2011, 08:07 AM EDT
Well our airspace is secure anyway. As long as nothing modern, like say a hot air balloon penetrates it.Our Aircorps P51 Mustangs are more than capable for the job at hand.
