In a desperate attempt to get rid of an ever-present wart, a 38-year-old man opted for an unconventional solution.

After drinking several pints of beer to gain courage, the man opened fire with a 12 bore Beretta and “accidentally” shot off most of his middle finger on his left hand. After hearing about the incident, police opened an investigation and the injured man is now facing up to 15 years in prison for possessing an illegal weapon.

The painful blemish had been a distraction for Murphy for five years and no matter how many doctor visits, creams or treatments he used, he saw no change. The Yorkshire man says that although he was aware that he could potentially face the charges, he has no regrets.

According to reports in the Daily Telegraph Murphy said "The best thing is that the wart has gone...It was giving me lot of trouble."

The man claims the dime sized blemish was his main target when he pointed the gun as he sat outside his home.

“I didn't expect to lose my finger as well when I shot it, but the gun recoiled and that was it,’ he said.

Murphy lost his job after the incident in March as a security officer at Markham Grange Nurseries, Doncaster. In court he pleaded guilty to theft of the shotgun by finding, and a second charge of possessing a firearm without a valid certificate.

In addition to a 16-week suspended prison term, Murphy was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and has to pay a fine of around $140. South Yorkshire Police are still trying to discover how the Beretta found its way to the hedge where Murphy claims to have found the weapon.

Richard Haigh, defending, said Murphy had been “a victim of his own stupidity when domestic pressures got to him”.
