Ryanair plane skids on icy Scottish runway

The plane landed with 'a bit of a bump,' said a passenger.

A Ryanair plane flying from Dublin to Glasgow slid on an icy runway in Prestwick Airport at 9am on Wednesday morning. The plane skidded on ice and came to a standstill part-way into a field.

None of the 129 passengers or six crew members was hurt.

“After a normal landing was completed and while taxiing from the runway, the aircraft encountered ice and slid just off the runway on to the grass verge,” Ryanair said in a statement.

"Ryanair apologises for any disruption suffered by passengers as a result of this incident," the statement added, according to the BBC.

One passenger, Alex Paton, told the BBC: “It did land with a bit of a bump but the plane didn't seem to be slowing down the way it would normally.”

“Everyone was pretty shocked. I don’t think most people realised we were in a field.

“It wasn’t until we were off that we realised how deep the wheels had gone into the field. Don’t get me wrong, it didn’t go into the field that long before it stopped."

He added: “I think the original plan was to pull the plane out of the field but, when you see it, there’s no way you’re pulling that plane out easily.”

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said in a London Times report: “It happened just after 9am as it landed. It slipped on to the grass. No one was injured and all the passengers have been taken to the terminal.”

Paton said the runway was extremely slippery. “You can hardly walk on the runway never mind stop a plane,” he said.

The runway reopened two hours later.
