Irish born Suffolk Police Commissioner, Richard Dormer has offered condolences to Shannan Gilbert’s family, following the discovery of the New Jersey woman’s remains last Tuesday.

"Our condolences to the Gilbert family and her friends. We hope this brings them closure and peace," Dormer said.

After an extensive search, Gilbert’s remains were discovered in Long Island wet lands. She was last seen in May 2010 running away from the Oak Beach home of a client towards the water. The 24-year-old had been working as prostitute.
 
The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Investigators made the grim discovery around a quarter of a mile away from where they located her cell phone, jeans, purse, and ID and lip gloss on December 7.

The search for Gilbert resulted in the discovery of 10 sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway in Long Island.

During the latest search for Gilbert’s remains, Dormer said he believed that the young woman had drowned as she fled her client's home.

"We believe that Shannan Gilbert ran into that area the night she disappeared," Dormer said. "It's very easy to get engulfed with water and muck and fall down and not be able to get out of there. So we surmise that that's what happened to Shannan and she's in there someplace, and we're going to do everything we can to find her."

Speaking about the discovery of her sister’s remains, Sarra Gilbert told Newsday she didn’t believe the story was over.

"I want the autopsy to come back to prove people wrong," she said.

"Hopefully, she passed quickly and didn't go through any pain," she said. "Hopefully, she went peacefully."

"Everyone's pretty much trying to be strong until we get all the answers," she added.

Describing the discovery of her sister's remains so close to Christmas, she said the finality was difficult.

"It's harder this year," Gilbert told Newsday, "because now we know for sure that she's gone."
