Police on Long Island have resumed their search for missing New Jersey prostitute Shannan Gilbert. Laois-born Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said last week that they believe she was one of the victims of the serial killer who is still at large on Long Island.

Dormer also made it clear that the police now believe that one serial killer is responsible for the deaths of ten people found in the area over the last year. Some of these murder cases date back to 1996.

Last December, four bodies were found around the barrier beach and another six were discovered close by later in 2011.

On Monday, 35 police officers from Suffolk and Nassau counties searched the area once more, accompanied by three cadaver dogs.

Officials told NBC that the search resumed after the FBI aerial surveillance team working in the area over the summer spotted items of interest which needed more scrutiny.

Dormer had previously believed that the ten murders were the work of three separate killers.

However, last week he retracted this theory and now believe they are the work of a lone killer.

Although he would not give a reason for his change of heart, he did note that all victims are linked to the sex trade.

He said that although Gilbert is likely a victim, the circumstances of her disappearance are different to the other victims.

Last summer, Shannan Gilbert went missing after meeting a client she had made contact with on the classifieds website, Craigslist.

Last December, four prostitutes’ bodies were found off the Ocean Parkway, wrapped in burlap. All of them went missing while meeting clients from Craiglist. At least one of the other six victims has been identified as a prostitute.

Please Irish Central, Stop publishing Quotes and Lies from your Native Son, the hapless Richard Dormer. You see, here in the States, Suffolk County to be exact, he is known as the complete clueless idiot that he truly always has been. He only became Commissioner by Contributing ten thousand dollars to a Crooked County Executive's Campaign, and became his puppet. The man was never qualified to be more than a washroom attendant. From his stories of being an investigator to reducing crime within the County, they are all lies on his part. Please try doing some real reporting! The man with all his stories to the Press, has hampered the investigation of this terrible crime. Thankfully the residents and Taxpayers of Suffolk County, NY only have a few more days left of this man's inept lack of leadership.
what a terrible sad dangerous life for ladies of the streets, surely it is time to put prostitution on a regulated basis where there could be safeguards ,health checks, drug check ups, programmes to get them off it.the money they earn they could keep, apart from a bit of tax, everybody wins except the sleazy ruthless exploiting violent traffickers and pimps, and they wouldnt be out on the mean streets to be murdered by sicko,s..
I hope they find this maniac soon. It's really unsettling knowing he's still walking around free, here on the Island.
