'Resign' call for Irish bishops who covered up sex abuse

Pressure to resign has begun on five bishops named in the Dublin Diocese report on child abuse. The report, which has shocked the nation, exposed a Church cover-up at every level throughout the '60s, '70s and '80s as well as into the '90s — and protection for priest child abusers at every turn.

The five, who formerly served in the Dublin Archdiocese and never pursued allegations against alleged priest child molesters, are Bishop of Limerick Donal Murray, whose handling of allegation was described as "inexcusable" in the report; Bishop Jim Moriarty of Kildare Leighlin Diocese; Bishop Martin Drennan of Galway Diocese; and the two Dublin auxiliary bishops, Bishop Ray Field and Bishop Eamonn Walsh.

Enda Kenny, leader of the Irish opposition party Fine Gael, has called on all five to resign. He stated that "those who were in positions of authority in Dublin archdiocese, and who knew what was going on, should no longer continue in such positions. "This is another appalling litany of shame. Apologies here are not good enough."

I completely agree with kickstar's comment below (well said too) - this isn't about resignation, humility or being sanctioned - these people are Criminals and as such should be arrested, brought before the criminal justice system, tried and convicted just like any other pedophiles have been. The Catholic Church has been forever a place for pedophiles to hide and hurt others - they are drawn to the church for the very reason their acts will be covered up. Its time to change that once and for all!!!
These Bishop and hi-hats need spend some time behind bars. There is a need for them to acquire a little humility The harm they have caused is so bad and has destroyed countless lives of decent simple people whose only crime was to have been born into the system of Catholicism. And I am sorry to say Diarmuid Martin you still haven't got it. "the manner in which the sexual abuse of children was dealt with in the Archdiocese in the past" was not just "inexcusable." It was Criminal and Criminal offenses were committed so there needs to be a message sent to the perpetrators that their Crimes have not been forgotten and will not be hidden under the cloak of and swept under the Ecclesiastical carpet like they were in the past. Moreover All of the hierarchy of the church today are in one way or another Culpable of these dastardly Crimes and nothing short of a complete house clearance will suffice, Being sanctioned by Canon law can no longer suffice, these criminals need to be brought before the States' judicial system as others are when laws are broken, It is an affront to every law abiding citizen to see these pervs roaming around free and beginning anew while the Victims of their abuses are forever imprisoned with the memories of the Nightmare that was their lives
THEY SHOULD BE EXCOMUNICATED.
I hope justice is served.
