A redheaded Irish man arrested for verbally abusing two Irish police officers claimed he lost his temper after an officer called him “ginger” and that he had endured a “lifetime of prejudice” over the color of his hair.

David O'Brien caught the attention of police when he shouted insults at a novelty photographer in Temple Bar Dublin over the prices he was charging. He then walked in front an unmarked car containing two plain-clothed police officers and a confrontation ensued.

"I have suffered from prejudice all my life as a redhead and I flew off the handle," O'Brien told the court. "I have been bullied and verbally abused. I flew into a rage."

The Dublin man denied the charges and insisted he never verbally abused the photographer and only became abusive towards police when they called him a “ginger”.

"The defendant was giving out over the price," one police officers told the court. "He said to the man, 'you are a robbing b******, charging €10.’ He made references to the man not being Irish."

Both police officers denied referring to O'Brien as “ginger”.

Judge Catherine Murphy found the 23-year-old guilty of charges of breach of the peace and applied the Probation Act pending his contribution of €150 to charity.

I'm called Red, Rusty, Ginger, Carrot Top all the time. But mostly I'm called Red and I love it. I feel special and the fact that I'm noticed every day by my co-workers keeps me smiling!
I agree.. RED Hair Rules. Here in the USA, people don't use "ginger." They would call my auburn hair carrot top. And I always said, " Are you a moron? Carrot tops are GREEN." Only my father and brothers could call me "red' when I was a child, and not get my temper up. Of course, I've mellowed with age. :) a little Ellen
Well, that is what Ireland got when the Vikings came to town about 1200 years ago, red hair and freckles. Having said that, the guy is probably right about abuse and name calling because of his hair. It is/has been true in the US for as long as I can remember, too. Not nice, but it is kid stuff. When adults don't stop being kids, it continues into the big world. I don't doubt for a minute that one of the cops called him "ginger" and set him off. Let me see, in the Temple Bar area...could he have had a pint or two before this happened? Classic bad drunk.

I agree, Shermajid. I've been called "ginger", but dont find it offensive at all. Is it a derogatory name? What does it imply? If he doesnt like to be called ginger, maybe he should visit a colorist.
RED HAIR RULES!
