A new RTE TV documentary reveals what goes on behind Ireland's closed bedroom doors.

The film, entitled 'In Bed with the Irish,' takes a look at the nation's attitudes on love, intimacy and sex through the opinions of a range of Irish couples, reports the Irish Independent.

The couples interviewed include a couple in their 70s, another in their 40s, and a model and her boyfriend who practice tantric sex and attend swingers parties.

Said Deirdre Morrissey, who has been with her boyfriend Rory for four years: "As a couple we already live very publicly through social media, we've entered reality competitions and exposed ourselves through my sex features with the Sunday Independent LIFE magazine. I'm from Dungarvan, a small town where my mum owns the local pub and when my sex features were published she was horrified; I think she was hiding from the neighbours.

"Sex is such a closed topic yet it's one thing we all have in common. Because sex is such a visceral, intimate and emotive subject people usually shy away from discussions about it. But I don't like these old taboos and I believe that for a society to be truly healthy people should be able to discuss everything with impunity."

She added: "Sex can be beyond the physical, it can transport us into another magical world where everything is perfect for a moment. It's a form of physical and emotional release.

"Couples who've been married for many decades tell me that sex gets less important as you get older, but I'm not there yet."

Another couple, Joe and Catherine, both now in their 70s, have known each other for 57 years. They discuss how their sex life came to an abrupt halt, not because of old age but because of illness. Other couples include Eamonn and Anne who argue over the duvet and Marie Claire and Stephen who still get it on despite having two young children.

The documentary will see the couples discuss bedtime habits and rituals, sexual attitudes and the impact of religion in the bedroom.

I don't know about the show. But many women from different races believe Irish Men stay strong well into their 80's. Polish men die out in their early 30's. Irish women want it but use it to manipulate the man. Ukraine women love it but tire out too easy.
"Tantric sex". There are three kinds, black, grey and white. Black is wholesale debauchery. Grey is a mix. And white is 'dry orgasm' sex, highly suited to sexually repressed Irish-Catholics of the 1950's and '60's. Incidentally, the objective of white Tantric sex is not pleasure or reproduction, but spiritual impregnation of your soul, and rebirth of your spirit. Enjoy!
Jeez, Don't we have more important things to discuss in documentaries besides the sex habits of Irish couples? I guess not.
The airing of a touchy subject (pun unintended)! It's important to remember the needs of your partner. They should always be met, so long as those needs don't conflict with your beliefs, such as no S & M activities! I recall a girl being criticized at Brandeis College, in 1968. She was living with her boyfriend, and said that sex was a form of "communication". She was only barred from the school's dining hall, which indicated the college was taking a less restricted view of the subject.
I'd be surprised if the sex lives of Irish couples were any different to those of couples in the states, or any part of the civilized world.
