The Queen’s visit to Dublin is causing chaos for expectant mothers and staff at one of Dublin’s busiest maternity hospitals.

The Rotunda Hospital in Parnell Square backs onto the Garden of Remembrance where the leaders of Ireland’s 1916 Rising are commemorated.

The English monarch is due to lay a wreath at the historic site on Tuesday and traffic in the area has been heavily restricted as a result.

That is causing nightmares for intending patients and staff at the hospital which deals with between 20 and 40 births on day given day and has already cancelled 500 appointments this week.

All staff parking has been withdrawn, diversions are in place for patients travelling to the hospital and visitors have been restricted.

Doctors doubt babies due this week will give any consideration to the Royal visit and have warned mums-to-be to be aware of the traffic problems that await them.

All expectant mothers have been warned of the road closures and the heavy security they will encounter on any trip to the Rotunda on Tuesday.

Dr Sam Coulter-Smith, master of the Rotunda Hospital, told the Irish Independent: “This is a headache and is having a major impact on the hospital.

“The area is significantly affected in terms of car parking and traffic coming up to and on the day of the event.

“If it has emerged someone is in labor then it has been agreed with police that access routes for patients will be provided.

“The visit is obviously a huge event for the country and it is very important but it does have a big impact on a working maternity hospital.”

Momma Ginnty: You're living in Cuckoo Land. Most of the babies born in that hospital (at Irish taxpayers' expense) are not Irish. In fact, a few years back African women were arriving heavily pregnant at Dublin Airport with a piece of paper which they would give to the taximan. It would say-- Destination: Rotunda Maternity. They were going straight from Africa to the Rotunda Hospital to have their baby (free of charges) in order to get Irish citizenship. That was eventually stopped, but the fraudsters and shysters were not forced to leave Ireland. You're living in a fantasy world about those names. They'll be more like Agnesczeivska, or Clement nGomo. You're so ignorant of the reality of Dublin, aren't you, momma? You told us a while back you had never even been in downtown Dublin. Where do you live? Out on a bog somewhere?
It is pathetic that these innocent, precious Irish children are not as important as Lizzie,...shame on you bastards!
There should be a route reserved completely for hospital access only.
Very strange indeed, and it should not happen at all, since it is socially entirely unacceptable, the Irish government should ensure that normal access to the hospital is not interrupted just because of the Queens nearby visit, those are no longer the days of King Henry VIII. or Elizabeth I. where the public had no rights, besides, Ireland is a republic and should be reflected.
Amazing how a Monarch's visit takes precedence over the safety of an Irish pregnant mother and child!!
Call your local midwife.
If its a girl they will call her Elizabeth, a lot of boys were called John Paul, after the pope, when he arrived in Dublin.
