The residence of the nation's presidents was not called the White House until after the War of 1812, when the British burned it. Architact subervised its restoration, it was painted white and became known as the White House. The original design by Hoban were was based on the Duke of Leinster's house in Dublin, now the Dáil (assembly of the Southern Irish state). Since Hoban made this enormous contribution to the U.S., one might reasonably expect that the current occupant of the White House would be inclined to remove some of the difficult obstacles faced by today's would-be immigrants to the U.S.
