The Pope is to follow the Queen to Ireland – and will celebrate mass at Croke Park in Dublin in June, 2012.
Pope Benedict is also expected to make history and lead the first Papal tour of Northern Ireland.
Newspaper reports on Monday morning claim that Pope Benedict XVI will arrive in Ireland next year to close the International Eucharistic Congress hosted in the capital.
The Vatican has yet to confirm plans for the first Papal visit to the Republic since 1979 and the first ever to Northern Ireland.
But the Irish Independent’s religious affairs correspondent John Cooney has claimed that the Pope will be the chief celebrant at a Mass in Dublin’s Croke Park on June 17th, 2012.
The open air service will mark the end of a week-long International Eucharistic Congress.
The 2012 visit by the Pope is bound to spark reaction if not protests from the victims of clerical sex abuse after the Vatican’s refusal to co-operate with the commission of inquiry into the archdiocese of Dublin.
The Indo reports that: “Pope Benedict selected Dublin as the venue for the world congress to foster spiritual renewal, in the wake of the clerical child abuse scandals and cover-ups which damaged the standing of the Irish church.”
Pope Benedict visited England and Scotland last September but Northern Ireland was not included on his itinerary for that trip.
Pope John Paul II had planned to visit Ulster in 1979 but the proposals were scrapped due to the Troubles.
Plans for the International Eucharistic Congress will be unveiled in Dublin on Monday.

Its very important Christains pary against th pope setting foot on Ulster soil . If he does it will be very symbolic and a sign of the saints being worn out . The time of Jacobs trouble is about to begin PRAY PRAY PRAY AGAINST THIS EVENT

The instructions given by Pope Adrian to King H. fell on deaf ears then; and who intructed the instuctors in perpetuity. Ireland has been treated unmercifally irrispective of who sits on what throne; and by divine rite at that.

@Ulsterman, I think that you are talking about the granting of Ireland to King Henry 11 by the english pope Adrian IV in 1155. The instructions for Henry were contained in the papal bull Laudbiliter. He was exhorted by the pope to show the people ''the good ways of life'' and not to mistreat them. Henry did not pay much heed to this advice and resorted to the sword. I agree with you that there was an element of control here. But overall the early Irish Christians did defer to the pope in matters of faith and doctrine. The Synod of Whitby had both both the 'Celtic' and 'Roman' rites of the Church universal together in 664A.D. There was never any disputes on matters of doctrine or faith between them. Minor differences were ironed out in the areas of custom e.g hair tonsure and technicalities surrounding the dating of Easter. The great Irish missionary Columbanus in his letters recognized the keys of authority given to the successor of St Peter in his time in the 7th C.

Gearoid4: The native, Celtic elements in the early Irish Christian Church had to be purged, in the Middle Ages, as the Pope and his hierarchical Roman power controlled more of the British Isles, in which the Irish language and culture was practically suppressed in all aspects of religion.

I sincerely hope the the Eucharist Congress set for 2012 will form a major signpost on the road to healing. Hopefully those who are preparing this major event will have this in mind. The Church is much in need of repentance and revitalization. The Congress should act as a spur in dioceses and parishes nationwide to go back to the source and summit of the Church i.e namely the encounter with Our Lord Jesus Christ under the species of bread and wine at the Eucharistic table. @justhimself Christ founded only the One Catholic Church under the successors of St Peter and not multiple versions of them. You speak of an 'Irish Catholic Celtic Church' but this was a mythological invention created by sectarians in the 19th C to link the anglican church of Ireland to some spurious native church in the early years of Irish christianity. There was the presence of chrisianity in Ireland with native, celtic elements but it was part of the church universal when there was unity of both Latin West and Byzantine East.

Who next? Gerry Springer? Oprah? Carlos Irwin Estevez? And, as we're at it, why are there only four Irish Saints? Surely a country that HAD such a catholic ethos, by the law of averages, should have far more.
STUMPTOWN | Mar 08, 2011, 09:44 AM EST
Pope Ben16, WHAT IS YOUR POSITION on the RCC ADMINISTRATION's policy of SILENCE THE TRUTH TO PROTECT THE IMAGE? What do you think of makeing children victims of sexual abuse to take a OATH OF SILENCE? Why was not the one that brought out the truth of RCC's children sex abuse to all of Ireland not given the title of CARDINAL of IRELAND since the TRUTH is most important in IRELAND and the world? What would CHRIST have done?

Justhimself. Thank you for bringing our true his story to light re Holly Roman Empire and the Crown £££$$$$$ So, pope, queen and obama are all coming in 2012? Coincidence -?? NO. For those Ayrish people who have yet to remember their true past, and not the distorted his story that was in our books, the clue is in the date 2012- ending of the cycle in the land of Danu- where it all began thousands of years ago- all there in stone in Tara and Bru na Boinne. The pope etc know the real reason why they come and their hidden agenda- but what about us Ayrish?

I dont want to feel this way; I dont LIKE feeling this way. And I know that my faith has sustained and helped me through many difficult experiences in my life. I cannot ignore or accept the abhorrent actions of many within MY CHURCH who have sullied it in the very act of preserving it (in their eyes) by sacraficing humanity and decency in the cause of self-interest, it would seem to me. The one consolation I continue to have is that the God of us all WILL hold all men and women to account for their action or inactions. And who knows, maybe the recent revelations are the start of that process; the start because I believe now that what is in the public domain is only part of what has been silenced and buried. There WILL be further installments!!
Collette2 | Mar 08, 2011, 03:37 AM EST
barneyjo, I'm sure you won't be alone in your views. Rome underestimates the youth of yesterday in that they become the adults of today, no longer impressionable and under the spell of all the hoo haa. One also has to consider all the children who have Frs who are clergy who in mosts instances, use the mothers as whores. The bastards, and I'm referring to the heirarchy who put their two bobs worth getting rid of them to preserve the priesthood.
Ulsterman | Mar 08, 2011, 12:26 AM EST
The Roman Church prevented the translation of the Bible into the Irish language for nearly four hundred years after Protestants printed Irish language Bibles in the 1600's. So much for the Roman Church being intrinsically Irish culture.

The popes are heading for ol erin. King Henry's religious figure Queen Eliz, for his Church of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and their equivalent the Episcopalian brand name of King Henry VIII is in America. Then the Roman brand who tells us "jews not being responsible for killing one of their own," who was the culprit otherwise? Obama is also headed for Ireland where these symbolic figures will come together and have a pow wow. The con comes in a variety of ways. They plan to calm the natives lest they go bonkers trying to pay bondholders and IMF boyos. Ireland being key in stopping the domino effect of all PIGS members from going south.

barneyjo | Mar 07, 2011, 07:10 PM EST
The risk for the Holy See in this is that if the Holy Father does indeed come to Ireland, and the impact of the visit fall far below that of John Paul II in 1979,then it will be deemed a failure. Speaking for myself (only) as one of the thousands of Irish youth who heard the Pope speak in Galway in 1979, I would have to say that I would feel in no way compelled to once more take to the highways of Ireland to be in Benedict's presence. I am both angry and hurt at the actions of the Church, ostensibly in my name; there is an image that I cant get out of my mind which is that of two young kids being brow-beaten into silence in 1975 in county Cavan, in the name of protecting the reputation of the Church. And try as I might to draw a line under all that has come to light, and that has been shown to have happened, I cannot. My conscience is telling me that many in power within the world catholic church are far from christ, and shamefully they cannot or do not wish to acknowledge that fact. The words of Pio in is description of meeting Christ keep coming to me; "Butchers - see what they have done to my church. Were it not for the Angels, I would have destroyed them long ago"

The Irish catholic church is on the verge of collapse. NO. The Roman catholic church in Ireland is, and will restablish as the BORN AGAIN, "Celtic Catholic Church" Whose connection to the Vatican will be by treaty of the "Celtic Catholic" faithful.
justhimself | Mar 07, 2011, 03:07 PM EST
The Crown and the Pope, The original conspiricy,The destruction of the "Celtic Catholic Church" They were not paying Peter's Pence to the Vatican. The Pope issued a papal bull, giving rule of Ireland to the English crown. Which they obeyed, like good catholics, and ruled Ireland in the name of god, with the Pope'S Blessing.(google Irish history, its in there)
