Pope Benedict XVI is facing tough opposition and widespread apathy ahead of his visit to Britain on Thursday, a new opinion poll shows.

It is shaping up to be totally different to the 1982 visit by his predecessor John Paul 11 which was akin to a rock star tour.

Protestors are demanding action and answers from the pope regarding the clerical sexual abuse of children, while many others are angry at the £20m cost of the visit., which is co-funded by the government.

According to The Guardian, 77% of people surveyed said that the trip should not be funded by taxpayers, while 79% saying they had  “no personal interest” in the visit.

Protest the Pope, one group with nearly 9,000 Facebook members, is planning a demonstration march in London against the pontiff’s visit. Terry Sanderson, the leader of the movement and the president of the National Secular Society, said that child sex abuse was "the one thing that the pope personally needs to answer for.”

While secularists are widely opposed, the pope is also facing criticism from Catholics as well.

"We are looking for the church to be more collaborative and to talk and listen to people more. It seems to us that the church is moving backwards, not forwards,” said Pat Brown, the spokesperson for the Catholic Women’s Ordination (CWO)in Britain.

However, others believe that many people are looking forward to the visit.

"There has been criticism from a small proportion of the population who oppose the visit in principle and they have been very ferocious in their attacks, but one wonders who these people speak for," said Austen Ivereigh, a Catholic journalist and the organizer of Catholic Voices, an unofficial response unit.

"The attacks seem to be coming from militant secularists and radical humanists disturbed by faith who want to chase religion entirely from the public square and deny it any voice at all.

"Their irrational hostility and fanaticism undermines their claim to pluralism and demonstrates that actually it is the pope who is the true humanist."

Father Federico Lombardi, the pope’s spokesman, said that there had been opposition on past visits, but added: "In this journey to Britain, it's broader because there are more groups of an atheist nature or that are anti-papal which are active and have demonstrated."

Don't all you misinformed and dis-informed Catholic haters --including the 'writer' of this screed, who does not seem to be able to rise up from the manure pile she inhabits to come up with articles equally hateful of any other than Catholic subjects-- feel totally frustrated at your miserable efforts to effect your desired change in people's attitudes against the Pope? -- After all the ranting, raving and foaming at the mouth... guess what? Except for a few of the usual AHoles no one paid attention to, BXVI had a most warm and loving welcome in all the places he visited in England. -- Time to go back to the drawing board, suckers! Get your tongues and keyboards (if not your meager intellect, which would be a futile enterprise since by all appearances it does not exist) for the next round. And as usual, be prepared again to eat a plateful of rotten crow.
It's not really 'a cool welcome' I'm in Birmingham at the moment where families are being asked to pay £25 per person to participate in an open air mass, they cannot afford it, for a family of 4 that's £100, plus due to security they are been asked to take their places at 03.00 am. It's going to be interesting though as Irish travellers are arriving in the city..I cannot see them paying to see the Pope... Two things come to mind...The film Cabaret and a song from said film Money....
Olkboreen: Your comment ("a German Pope paying a courtesy visit to a German Queen possibly?") made me smile. We all would be much better off without a Queen, and a Pope in this world. (By the way--I am a Christian and advocate for democracy and civil rights.)
The Public is not fooled. The offending clerics must be turned over to the Authorities. All past criminals must pay for their Heinous Acts ! This Pope is INEPT !!
ukers have a pope of their own - she be queenie to carry on the tradition set down by henry viii With the queen coming next year to 'ol erin there'll be a need for mucho queen standards embossing of the harp. Ref URL angelfire.com/ ny/border/ symbols.html
The Pope, ever how recognized, is, in fact, Just a Man! The RCC is at fault for THEIR man-made, non-Scriptural, 'Doctrine' that requires Clergy to never marry, nor enjoy their marital sexuality, (including children of their own), is against the very nature of man as designed by Yahweh/God. It is man-made doctrine and has ALWAYS been wrong! NO man-made doctrine can change Yahweh's natural laws!
Uslster 1. GOOD POINT, what does the pope's visit have to do with Ireland???MMMMMM????
Right on. Blaming criticism of the pope on atheist groups reminds me of the Vatican dismissing as "petty gossip" reports of massive sex abuse in Europe. The pope blamed the abuses in Ireland partly on the bishops for failing to be accountable. But he has yet to hold himself to account. I spent five years doing research on the abuses in Ireland (for my book, "An Irish Tragedy: How sex abuse by Irish priests helped cripple the Catholic church) and found the church cover-up there that we now see took place in Europe.--Joe Rigert
that guy is the antichrist and a pervert..
To answer 'Ulster1'-Nothing to do with Ireland actually-a German Pope paying a courtesy visit to a German Queen possibly? Thought I'd mention it.Slan.
I'm Irish and Catholic living in the UK. Permit me to make one or two observations.(1). 'The Catholic Women's ordination'is tiny in terms of active membership-more noise than numbers! (2).The vast majority of practising Catholics in the UK, though badly shaken by recent horrific events, never the less welcome the Pope to the UK. Incidentally,it is important to point out that his visit to Scotland, England and Wales is a State visit(an Invitation from the UK Government/the Queen) and not a Pastoral visit as was the last Papal visit.(3).The UK, is a nominally Protestant country that is now almost entirely secular, with a vociferous well organized ant-Catholic partly media-led faction, whose roots are in the 1500's. The modern Secularists, are only too happy to jump on any bandwagon-they're not too fussy! Of course there will be demonstrations-we're used to it-we'll get over it!. Pardon me for making the above observations, but I am aware that 'Irish Central' is essentially an Irish-American website and I rather have the impression that you guys tend to forget that there are considerable numbers of Irish, and second generation Irish in the UK-we have different perceptions sometimes OK? Great site-I enjoy it!
Another famous lie that does the rounds about Benedict is that he was "conscripted" into the Hitler Youth — as membership was required by law for all 14-year old German boys after December 1939...Many German boys avoided joining the Hitler youth..But Benedict was a member in good standing.
If the intent of Pope's visit is to convert the English, he's going to have to visit a lot of pubs to reach his audience.
I hope Herr Papst Ratslinger gets a roasting hot reception, like what used to be done to victime of the Holy Inquisition, be burnt at the stake.
Question: what has a German going to visit England got to do with Ireland? Just wondering.
