Snow and rain failed to dampen the spirits as thousands of tourists added a mix of color to the St Patrick’s Day festivities all across Ireland.

Over 220,000 arrivals at Dublin Airport over the bank holiday weekend ensured the capital city was packed for the traditional parade.

And the stars of the show were the pipes and drums of the New York Fire Department according to the Irish Sun newspaper.

The paper reported that the musical firefighters had flown in just hours beforehand and were just one of a dozen US bands who flew in for the festivities.

The report says over half a million hardy souls braved the cold and wet conditions in Dublin alone as marching bands and carnival floats celebrated the national feast day.

Over 6,000 people from 144 nations marked the year of The Gathering by taking part in the People’s Parade which preceded the main event and followed the same route.

Brazilian samba dancers offered a little entertainment for the men while sailors from visiting French frigate De Grasse won over a legion of female fans.

Parade Grand Marshal Nicky Byrne, the Westlife singer, told the media how the afternoon’s frequent downpours had failed to dampen spirits along the route.

Byrne said: “This brings back memories of parades as a young fella sitting on my dad’s shoulders. The weather isn’t great but it’s a great day out.

“Traveling with Westlife meant we were away a lot on St Patrick’s Day. So to be home now is pretty special.”

Parades in Cork, Belfast and Galway and all across the country also drew big crowds.
Shop owners reported an increase in business on last year.

And President Michael D. Higgins thanked those who had made the day special.

Speaking at the Dublin parade, the President said: “This is a day to celebrate being Irish and to celebrate the Irish and we have done just that.”

Jacers - excellent post and well said!
(...more) Whaaat a great effort they (the FDNY band) made...! We Dubliners were ever so delighted and pleased to see them and thankful for their participation. Maith go leor do na fir agus na mná i an FDNY!! As mo chroí ó Blá Cliath agus go fíor Éireannach, Buíochas Libh go Léar! (All the best to the men & women of the FDNY. From my Dublin and very Irish heart, Thank You All so Much!!)”. *PS* – it wasn’t so cold or as wet in Dublin as Counihan writes above; it did splash rain a little bit from time to time but it wasn’t so cold or so wet as he writes. I hope all the visitors who participated in the two Dublin Parades (The Peoples' Parade and the official Parade), recovering this morning from their great efforts yesterday, enjoyed this morning’s (surprisingly contrasting from yesterday) mild Irish warm glorious sunshine in Dublin which, a pity, shuda been glowing yesterday for them all. As we Irish happily sing at outdoor celebrations times #Never mind the weather, as long as we’re together...# All visitors helped make it a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day’s celebration for us all here in Dublin so a huge big “THANK YOUZE ALL” from this Dubliner, jacers.
I’m reposting a comment I made elsewhere on ICentral (which I hafta split in two here): “I must say Congratulations and mucho thankso to all the American Bands who made the Dublin St. Patrick’s Day Parade so spectacular yesterday. All of the US bands (and the one and only Canadian Burlington Teen Tour Band) were fantastic, immaculately turned out, playing great music and some baton holders and cheerleaders doing some spectacular dancing in the streets of Dublin – Bands from Sth Carolina, Colorado, NY, Indiana, Iowa, Florida, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Louisiana and especially Brewster from NYC but wasn’t the Cedar Rapids Band from Iowa something else on the day??? – They were a real stand-out band with the Colorado band a close second by the scrimpiest margin but the biggest thanks must go to the FDNY Pipe & Drum Band who paraded in NYC’s parade on Saturday and flew through the skies during the night to appear again in Dublin’s (Sunday) parade yesterday. (More...)
Ps The snow in NY held off until late, it was mild and did nothing to what was a spectacular parade enjoyed by millions.
Looks line some fun and silliness at the Dublin parade, Stevenstar. I believe more than a few Leprechauns made an appearance as well. Same themes as the New York parade. The Irish are embracing the American way of doing things it seems. :). Go ahead Steven, I can hear it now all that crying, moaning, handwringing and whining like a baby again. Must be hard for you since you hate anything American. Waaaaaahhh! Boo hoo!
Again we can only wonder about all the support for an ancient, tiny Ireland. Of course they never harmed anyone, were teachers, along with being friendly, helpful, kind people wherever you would meet them which has been our experience. We hope STEVENSTAR gets help for his problems.
WHAT A LOAD OF LIES WE ACTUALLY HAD LOVELY SUNNY WEATHER FOR OUR PARADES AND DUBLIN WAS AMAZING HAHA !! WHERE DO U PEOPLE GET OFF ON PRINTING ALL THESE LIES ,, MY GOD THE SNOW IN THE NEW YORK WAS DREADFUL ALTOGETHER!!!
The spirits were high? Oh yes there were!
