Ireland has gone to the polls again – voting is underway in the EU Fiscal Treaty referendum.

Polling stations opened at 7am on Thursday morning and will remain open until 10pm that night all across the country.

More than three million people are entitled to vote in the referendum.

This is Ireland’s ninth Europe-related referendum and the 33rd time the electorate has been asked to approve a change in the 1937 Constitution.

Government partners Fine Gael and Labor and their Fianna Fail opposition have all campaigned for a Yes vote.

Sinn Fein has led the No side in the campaigning which stopped at 2pm on Wednesday.

Opinion polls show a healthy lead for the Yes side but the No campaign believe many voters have still to make up their mind.

Reports say islanders and those in institutional care have already cast their ballot, while a further 13,000 are eligible for postal votes.

I agree with the people here…Do the Irish people have any idea what they have done? Or alternatively was the voting system rigged? The rules with that treaty are horrendous and doesn’t this also trigger off the “European Stability Mechanism” (ESM)?
@Bythebay I wish for everyone within the UK to have the vote to leave or stay within the EU. I can state that 90% of the people want the same right to choose their own future. Of course I would want out as everyone i know does. The EU is a failed concept. It does not make sense for Britain to pay £40 million per day 365 days per year to be within the EU. A common agriculture policy that fails everyone. Butter mountains and wine lakes. Its crazy and anyone with an ounce of common sense would realise it. I could have predicted that The ROI would vote in favour of the Fiscal Treaty the minute it was announced. I did not follow polls in the Republic prior to voting as it does not concern myself in Northern Ireland. Why have the Republic of Ireland voted in favour of the Lisbon Treaty several years ago after changes on abortion? What has abortion got to do with economics? Taxation? National Debt? Finance? Growth? Employment? etc, Nothing. Absolute nothing. So why did the Republic support it the second time round? Fools and the fools deserve what they have got. So dont complain now. You lot have made your bed so enjoy it. @IrelandNorth well done for voting no. You were entitled to vote unlike the weasel that is @seanomelbourne who claims to be Irish. By the way I am Northern Irish (and British) and I haven't fled to another country unlike yourself. Come to think about it your more of a rat whom has got of the sinking ship that is the Republic of Ireland.
seanomelbourne, you're a laugh, subject of Her Majesty in Australia, criticizing allan07 whose part of your defined island of Ireland. You left decades ago, you have no stake in any of it and are a laugh criticizing those on your so-called island of Ireland for having opinions you don't share. If you were so Irish you never would have emigrated. You're an Aussie now.
allan07, show me anywhere I said how I was going to vote on the Treaty. You're delusional if you think I did.
IrelandNorth in the US, you're muddled, polls are across the country of Ireland. If those in Northern Irealnd UK don't like how their country is managed they can leave any time they choose. No one is keeping them there. They can follow you to the US.
Going to the polls beats going to the dogs anyday. Polls are only across the State rather than the country as a whole! Six county inhabitants and subjects of the UK are denied their francise yet again. As many amendments to De Valera's Constitution as there are counties in Ireland. Fianna Fail is Yes like the Government - despite being opposition(?) If that's opposition, I'd hate to see collaboration. "... those in institutional care have already cast their ballot ..." Hmmm! I trust those in mental health instutions had more sanity than the Yes campaigners! alan07! I respect your economic expertise, but I fear your academic objectivity is scewed by an ethno-centric superiority complex and sectarian supremacy. I intuit your predictions are designed to damage rather than forecast! Personally, I voted NO of course, and will of course be disappointed if it is carried. Not because I'm Europhobic, but because I'm not an a la carte democrat like those pushing for a Yes vote. I actually agree with you - voters for this Brussels 'Austerity' Treaty are "turkeys voting for Christmas" (alan07, 2012). Síochan!
allano7 can follow the polls and make a prediction, he's so clever. One can only hope for an upset in the polls.I don't know why he bothers venting his anti-Irish steam on this site given his hatred of Ireland.Making a ridiculous statement that people will condemn a yes vote after voting for it is a sad indictment of this weasel-faced bigot.
Does anyone remember my wise words? Greece will go down the pan and default. Spain will follow and Ireland will be next after Portugal. Wheres all the people whom called me a Orange b*****d now? Have you seen the money markets recently? Still with a 1st in economics I gave wise advice and it was disregarded because of hatred and bigotary. I did say Gerry Adams knows nothing about economics so dont be fooled by his stupid ideas. He is the Osama Bin Laden of Irish Politics. All the parties in the Republic of Ireland are clueless monkeys. FF/FG/Labour/Greens and yes SF. Hopeless the lot. The referendum today is a waste of time. Even if the people of the Republic reject the fiscal treaty it will still become law. 5 countries need to reject it for it to be rejected. In any case the Republic of Ireland will support it. Next week, next month we will see people on this site such as @Bythebay and @IrelandNorth upset by it. (Having voted in support of it). Turkeys voting for Christmas and then complaining on Christmas eve that they are in pain. I predict the Republic of Ireland to vote in support of this Treaty. Watch this space everyone.
A corrupt court, a corrupt police force, corrupt politicians and a secret voting system that has allowed opinions into law...........The primary use of opinions in law is to commit crime and hide the evidence..........Ireland's voting system is 110 percent corrupt.
