Police are investigating the first road rage fatality in the history of Ireland.

Raymond Bates, a 49-year-old Englishman, has died of head injuries after he was beaten with a hurley stick by an angry motorist in south Dublin.

Bates, a married father from Newcastle, UK, had just moved to Dublin two months ago to work as a pipe-layer.

The road rage-fueled attack occurred around 7:30pm last Sunday evening in Ballsbridge, an exclusive Dublin suburb. Both men are believed to have stepped out of their vehicles, after which Bates was violently attacked.

The men were traveling in the same direction and were stopped at a red light  An argument broke out after one of the cars did not move away fast enough after the light changed. The attacker took the hurling stick form the trunk of his car and hit Bates repeatedly with it.

Bates made his way home after the incident but felt unwell and presented himself at St. Vincent’s Hospital the next day. He was then transferred to the country’s main neurological facility in Beaumont Hospital, where medics were forced to place the man into an induced coma. His condition worsened, and he passed away Thursday night.

The other motorist involved gave himself up  at Irishtown police station and is being questioned. No arrests have been made so far.

“We are following a definite line of enquiry and the investigation is going well,” said a police  spokesperson.

The police are urging witnesses to come forward to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

“I heard in the local shop that someone had pulled out in front of someone else on the road,” said a man from the Sandymount area.

“It's shocking that it should come to this. It's the times we live in. It's very sad.”

The guy really felt it necessary to use a hurley stick instead of his fists? What a coward. I'm sure he wishes he could go back and do it all over again. The punishment in Ireland needs to fit the crime! Maybe people will think twice about how they choose to react in such situations. The punishment in the USA is soft. Which is one of the main reasons there is so much crime there. People need to be held accountable for their actions, and maybe attend church a little more often wouldn't hurt either. God bless the family's affected by this terrible tragedy.
This is a disgusting case of murder. It shows what a sick world we are living in when one man kills another over a traffic light incident.
I find it's best not to be provocative toward other drivers. Who hasn't made a mistake on the road? Who hasn't been in too much of a hurry? Road courtesy is much more the norm. Tragic and sad for anyone involved in road rage of this magnitude.
Nothing justifys hitting somebody with a hurley and killing them i am a great believer in giving the two fingers and screaming and shouting at other drivers but I don't think i want to progress to killing somebody in another car. I feel sorry for the people involved
Theres 2 sides to this story,if the Garda thought it was murder the attacker would be in jail now. We're only getting to hear one side of it.The attacker did turn himself in right away, but the cops let him go.Its very sad all round for both familys.
The lunatics who attack over some stupid driving incident should be imprisoned for life if someone else loses his/her life due to road rage. Call it what it is: murder.
Road rage happens everywhere. And Yerffac, I recently spent two weeks driving round Ireland and had no problems whatever - only one "rage" incident, and that was our own fault. Drivers were courteous and all in all it was a total pleasure. Doesn't mean that this guy isn't a yob/bully and should be brought to justice. But as in most countries, he's in the minority.
Yerffac stop talkin out of yer arse man , 27-year-old Polish man viciously attacked in Coolock in Dublin saturday morning is now in critical condition in hospital after he was found on a road in the Newtown Industrial Estate. A man in his 20s has been charged in connection with an attack after two were arrested just hour's after the incident , and for the rest of ya '' boo fookin hoo '' how many murder's similar to this one take place in America or in the rest of the world for that matter eh ? you only have to watch the video's uploaded on Liveleak everyday to see what i'm on about !
Agreed Monsoonman, People will assault people and kill them without guns. The Irish laws banning guns is draconian and, more importantly, naive!
If it was mandatory for all law abiding citizens to carry firearms while driving....The roads would be a polite place to drive on.
I've seen road rage in person and it's alarming - even in the USA. Sad it's happening in Ireland.
See what happens when you just use your fists at a hurley stick fight. Angry Irish? No such thing.
Thats just so sad and so pointless, that poor mans children and family, so many peoples lives will be changed forever on both sides. God rest his soul and comfort both families.
Irish Guardians of the peace are too comfy to get involved. Sick mothers. Why don't they call such an attack as a murderous terrorist attack, with a weapon that is cited in the myth of famed Cuchuliann (phonetic) prowess. The perpetrator of this horrific act should receive his just punishment which should be - put him to death by repeated beathings over his head with hurleys. The Euro sob sisters would have none of that. Dangerous Irish cities are to be avoided at all costs - Dublin, Cork and Limerick for starters.
WOW shocking i cant believe it thats the road i grew up on,the picture is the corner of Tritonville road and Sandymount rd..God rest his soul..
