The man who exposed the suicide of Irish girl, Phoebe Prince, in South Hadley in January to the national media has told IrishCentral.com that an attempt was made to run him down and his life has been threatened in anonymous letters.

Darby O'Brien, founder and president of Darby O'Brien Advertising and Public Relations in South Hadley, was out walking his dog at night recently when a car "came driving at me," in an attempt on his life.

"I was walking the dog along a major road when this car came right off the road and up on the curb towards me," he said, adding that he managed to get out of the way on time.

"I knew coming out against this that I would always be taking a risk," he said.

He has also received threatening letters that warned he could be killed  since he has spoken out against the South Hadley High School.

"I've received letters saying I should be beaten up and driven out of town from anonymous people in South Hadley," he said.

Some letter writers even went as far as saying they would kill him.

But O'Brien is not prepared to give up the fight to have the school authorities exposed .

He feels it's imperative that they are held responsible for neglecting to stop the bullying inflicted on Phoebe by a core group of students.

O'Brien blew the whistle on the bullying and the school's neglect of the situation after Phoebe's parents visited O'Brien's office in South Hadley. "I've never seen people so broken," shared O'Brien.

"They asked me to keep fighting the fight they couldn't," said O'Brien promising them he would do everything in his power to keep the spotlight on the school authorities.

Phoebe's parents, who are still living in South Hadley with their other children, told O'Brien they are very grateful for the support they are getting from the community.

"There are a few people helping them cope with this tragedy and they are very grateful to them," said O'Brien.

O'Brien, whose step-daughter attends South Hadley High, called his friend, Boston Globe reporter, Kevin Cullen, after local media in South Hadley "walked away from the story."

"This school system is notorious for looking the other way," said O'Brien wanting to expose their neglect and have them take some responsibility.

"The kids charged should not be left carry all he blame," he added.

"It's time someone held the school authorities responsible."

And that is exactly what O'Brien intends to do.

He will not give up - despite the constant threat on his life.

"This is a gutless town but I will continue the fight," he said.

good for you keep up the good work they think they are above the law bunch low lifes
Sounds like some adults in the community have a bullying problem as well. No wonder the kids learned that behavior. Bullies are such cowards.
You're a Great Man Darby O'Brien!
Clarification: I'm the reporter who wrote this story. Darby O'Brien in fact was misquoted in the very last line of this article. His actual words were ; "The school committee is gutless but I will continue the fight." My apologizes to Mr. O'Brien and the town of South Hadley.
Good for Mr. O'Brien. He's a hero in my eyes. May justice be done and may the Prince family be consoled in their terrible loss.
jerianneclancy-I believe he`s calling south hadley "a gutless town" because even with all the attention this case is now getting it`s still only Mr O Brien and a handful of others from the town who have raised their voices in opposition. You say yourself you are 2nd generation in south hadley and you respect his fight to bring those in the wrong to justice. Well why don`t you and all the other residents who dont fall into the gutless category call Mr O Brien and ask what you can do to help him in his fight for justice for Phoebe and her family? I am sure the majority of people in south hadley are good people, but all it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing..........
What a nice and pleasant town IN HELL!!!
I take offense to Mr O'Brien's comment about South Hadley being "...a gutless town...". A born and raised 2nd generation "townie", I know many residents who absolutely do not fall into that category. While I respect his fight to see that the adults who knew something and did nothing be brought to justice I feel that Mr O'Brien should be careful about what he says and how he says it. South Hadley is a not the horrific place that it has been made out to be. A horrific event occurred there, it could have happened anywhere. Those involved in this tragedy do not represent the entire town. Mr O'Brien, I believe you owe an apology to the GOOD people who reside in South Hadley.
I am on your side, Stay safy, Ill keep you in my prayers. Greg
Hang in there, Mr. O'Brien! And thank you for standing up and not letting this tragedy get swept under the rug.
Looks like the bullies are still going at it. Keep up the strength O'Brien. We are on your side!
How can a community sustain academic integrity and quality if they are never held accountable for it? The pioneer valley is known around the state as a progressive community - I should know - I have lived and studied in the area. How progressive are death threats and attempts to kill a person, who has demonstrated nothing but decency and support to a grieving family? Please, do the community a favor and grow up for the sake of people who want integrity and honesty in their lives.
Mr. O'Brien: Please take whatever precautions you need to take to stay safe. The Prince family and others like them need you. Since the Phoebe Prince story broke, I have read a number of articles on teen suicide by bullying (Bullycide-sadly, it even has a name)and I haven't found one yet where the administration of a school has stepped up and took action against the bullies themselves. It's always the victim that has to put up, shut up, toughen up or change schools etc. It's time that changed.
To the people who are threatening Mr. O'Brien, do you not realize we around the world are watching you? Do you think it would have been better to sweep Phoebe Prince's death under the rug? Your town and high school has an opportunity to be a catalyst for change. To the teens who have charges against them, let the courts decide their restitution. For the adults who failed this young teen, whether unwittingly or... help the South Hadley teens who are looking to you for healing and understanding.
