Peru Two struggle to cope with conditions in Lima prison reveals Mum
Irish and Scottish girls treated for bug bites in assessment centre
The 20-year-old from Tyrone has received medical treatment after suffering a reaction to bites.
McCollum Connolly and Scottish girl Melissa Reid are awaiting trial for attempting to smuggle cocaine worth over $2million out of Peru.
The Peru Two are currently in custody at an assessment centre in Lima’s main prison which houses murderers and high-profile terrorists. They face 15 year sentences if found guilty.
Reid’s mum Melissa has revealed in a TV interview that both girls needed injections to control swelling after suffering bad bites.
She also she was pleased the ‘very close’ duo were being held together and confirmed they had to have cold showers among other tough conditions.
She told the Irish Independent “They’ve actually been bitten by some bugs that are in the assessment unit they are being held in. I believe they’ve had to have an injection to try and stop them from swelling up.”
“Melissa is just happy to get a shower, but it is a cold shower – you can’t get hot water.
“The language barrier is difficult, she’s determined to learn Spanish so she can speak to the guards and fellow prisoners.”
