US giant PayPal is to create 1,000 jobs in Dundalk, County Louth. The announcement will be made by the Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny on Tuesday.

PayPal already has 1,500 people employed in Dublin and the facility is a major boost for the Irish jobs agency, the Industrial Development Agency.

PayPal is a subsidiary of E Bay, the California-based on line auction site.

The new facility will process online payments from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The 1,000 people employed will be a huge boost for the economy of Dundalk, a depressed town, near the Northern Ireland border.

The jobs will be filled over a four year period as the company ramps up operations.

Louise Phelan, vice president of Paypal-''She said the new jobs may be open to both graduates and those currently unemployed, but 50 per cent of the roles will require knowledge of a second language.''As most Irish people do not have a 2nd language, then Im sure a lot of these jobs will go to non Irish people.
Great news!
1000 jobs? How many of them will go to foreign migrants? I'd guess maybe 800. What's the point of Ireland hawking for jobs to solve the unemployment problem of Poland, India etc?
According to Newnation it is another example of an American Corp. come to rip off Ireland!
It's about time that a company bases itself somewhere other than Dublin, Galway or Cork or the likes. The border towns really need a boost and this will help the Northern economy as well. Though Paypal have the worst customer service as it stands.
Dundalk eh. Here's how this came about: Enda: "Great news lads, the Yanks are throwing in another 1,000 jobs to the Dublin area!" Gerry Adams: " No they're not!" Enda: "What do you mean Gerry, sure the paper is all but signed!" Gerry: "Those 1000 jobs are for my Louth constituency!" Enda: "But..." Gerry: "Those jobs are for Dundalk, or you're going to Pay Pal!" (Gerry gives his Armalite look) Enda: "OK, sure lads look the Yanks are dishing it out around the country, all boats rise on the tide eh?"
FastEddy, we already use paypal here. We arent in the stone age!
Of interest: PayPal is the most cost effective way to send money around the world, for international transactions and currency conversions. Our business uses PayPal all the time. Good for Ireland.
