It's been a bumpy first week as Mitt Romney's Vice President pick for Paul Ryan. Having just revealed that Rage Against the Machine is his favorite band, Ryan found himself the target of a scalding new op-ed by band member Tom Morello.
Published Thursday night on Rolling Stone's website, according to the Huffington Post, Morello blasts Ryan as "the embodiment of the machine our music rages against."
Morello then compared Ryan's appreciation of his band to Charles Manson's love for The Beatles and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's passion for Bruce Springsteen.
But more than anything else, Morello blasted what he called Ryan's "guiding vision of shifting revenue more radically to the one percent."
Ryan himself has plenty of "rage" Morello observed, but it's "a rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment."
Morello, alongside actor Mark Ruffalo and Coldplay singer Chris Martin, has advocated for the so-called 'Robin Hood Tax' which would place a small levy on all financial transactions. That money would then be used to assist citizens who suffered at the hands of the recession.
Other musicians are also making their dictate for the Romney - Ryan ticket apparent. This week The Silversun Pickups sent the Romney campaign a strongly worded cease-and-desist letter when they discovered the campaign had played their song 'Panic Switch' at a public event. In response, the campaign reportedly said the song would not be used again.
"We don't like people going behind our backs, using our music without asking, and we don't like the Romney campaign," the band's frontman Brian Aubert wrote. "We're nice, approachable people. We won't bite. Unless you're Mitt Romney!"

Obnce again, we have entertainers who should stick to entertaining and keep their misguided, under or non-researched opinions to themselves. NO ONE in the UNited States is anti-immigrant. We are anti-ILLEGAL immigrant. I don't find Morello's rant to be scathing, I find it to be based on left wing controlled media propaganda and therefore misguided. There is no "1%" vs. the "99%" outside of the Sol Alinsky inspired communists looking to create chaos and unrest in this country. Morello should do less time commenting and more time reading and researching what is actually behind the Wall Street movement.

@Ephraim, what a load, founding fathers were terrified of tyrannical government. They were afraid of non Americans attaining the presidency that they included it in the Constitution. They also had citizenship requirements for legislatures. The seanos, eirias, mac31s do not disgust me for they actually believe their cause, you are just a paid propagandist, and not a good one at that, PS. when you wrote about your trip to Ireland you reinforced the American stereotype that is so disliked, very condescending.
EphraimKibbey | Aug 21, 2012, 12:30 AM EDT
@irishpjk - Thank you for your service! My mom's folks include a guy named John Howland who came over hanging on to one of the Mayflower's lines half drowned. He was an indentured servant of the Governer and married his daughter. Both Bill Clinton and George Bush are also decended from him. My Dad's line includes a widow and her three sons escaping the famine in Ireland. All of my ancestor immigrants would have asked: What's a green card. There is this little statue of a lady in the harbor of New York City which was given to this nation back when it still had a heart. Part of its inscription reads: Give us your tired, your poor, your teeming masses yearning to be FREE... There is nothing on it about green cards or quotas or immigration laws. Our founding fathers believed that ALL men were created equal. Notice that is not ALL Americans, or ALL Europeans, or ALL college educated, or ALL green card holders. Our national sin is that we MADE you stand in line and MADE you get a green card and that we have immigration laws at all. Our founding fathers are rolling in their graves at how far we have deviated from their beliefs. GOP Nativist philosophy: I got mine now I'll make laws so you can't get yours. Immigrants are, and have always been, the very life blood of this country. Without their vitality, we will curl up and die.

They fail to find stupid democrats Tom as they do not exist
Tom Mo | Aug 19, 2012, 05:07 PM EDT
McNamare31. "Those were FOX exit polls...need I say more?" Well indeed you should my friend. Only FOX has the interest and the courage to expose these idiots for what they are. Those were real questions and real answers by real people. MSMBC, CNN will not touch the subject of stupidity among Democrat voters.

Saw the kinks in Lowell coliseum great show, Floyd all excellent musicians, If you never heard of the ramones you probably won't like them, my guess is that steely dan royal scam would be a meeting place in the middle. As for Ephraim being frsh air, c'mon, he's a hack, bought and paid for, you should be able to pick up on that.
Pittsburghkid | Aug 19, 2012, 02:10 PM EDT
Nice to see this Communist Site give a boost to an Irish American. I guess if Ryan was Black, then you'd be nice to him. No prejudice in this site.
JimmyJK | Aug 19, 2012, 11:31 AM EDT
Do the GOP candidates read ANY lyrics of the musicians they like? 1. Chris Christie - and Bruce Springsteen - Bruce can't stand him because his political actions are in direct opposition to the strong content of most of Bruce's songs 2. Jeff Fitzgerald - He used Dropkick Murphy's song "shipping up to Boston"The Dropkick's were furious as Fitzgerald is a crony of Gov. Walker who is extremely anti-union and the Dropkick's are very pro-union especially the AFL - CIO. 3. Paul Ryan - Republican VP candidate - And Paul Ryans three favorite bands: Rage Against the Machine, Slayer and the Grateful Dead.... huh

Irishpjk. You said it brother, I had the same experience. Some pipsquaks at IC don't understand.
Tom Mo | Aug 19, 2012, 12:01 AM EDT
Eschetic. "The well educated voter, bla bla, well educated bands, songwriters and artists" are the answer. Have you ever noticed the videos of the exit polls of the 2008 elections? Those who voted for Obama didn't have a clue about civics, knew nothing about the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, the Second World War; didn't know what the American Revolution was about;didn't know that it was England the Colonists revolted against. They attributed quotes from Obama and Biden to McCain and Palin. They did't have a clue about America. But they were well up on American Idol, the View, and, as you call them "educated bands". Whatever it is you are smoking I'd suggest you cut down a little.
Tom Mo | Aug 18, 2012, 11:21 PM EDT
Antoinette Kelly There is no rage against immigrants in this country. The rage is against illegal immigrants.
irishpjk | Aug 18, 2012, 10:36 PM EDT
wtf Are there a lot of confused people out there? Or is it a lot of stupidity? Or do they think the rest of us are stupid? When they talk about emigrants they class all emigrants the same. The emigrants with green cards waited on a list, went to a US Embassy and took a test, cleared a police back ground check and had a medical, and then they came here to live and work. They pay fees and taxes; I know this because that is how I got here. To show my appreciation for the privilege of bettering my life I served in the armed forces of this great nation. That was the best education an emigrant could get, you learn American history and culture you meet citizens from all parts of the world, all walks of life, race, color and creed, there is no better way to learn about your new homeland. Now you also have illegal emigrants here they are not the same as a green card holder, they broke all the rules and the law to get here, the don’t pay taxes, so at best they cheat and lie to live of the backs of the working people and want us to give them handouts. When people say I support the immigrants because my parents were immigrants they seem to forget about the green cards, did your parents have green cards if so that makes them different than what we are talking about.
seanomelb | Aug 18, 2012, 10:35 PM EDT
Briano I don't know the Ramones music. I thought you would take your cue from Fox and the terrible musicians they show.My favourite album is "dark side of the moon" or "The Wall". Pink Floyd,The Kinks are my favorites.Ephraim you're a breath of fresh air.
EphraimKibbey | Aug 18, 2012, 10:11 PM EDT
@Eschetic - VERY well explained, one would have to be a moron or a 1%'er not to understand your logic and historical perspective! @JimmyJK - Ryan said that he just liked the sound of the their music and had not paid attention to the lyrics. I believe that the Rage Against the Machine's lyricist had a few choice words in regard to his intelligence after that excuse. I hope he pays more attention to the lyrics of the songs to which his kids listen. I think this is all going fantastically well. The nation is getting to know Mitt, Paul and the GOP so well and really finding out what is written in their lying hearts. In 2010 they got away with telling such a whopper about their ability to create jobs and sooo many folks believed them, that now the nation is seething with resentment toward them and their lies. Four more years and both houses! Then maybe our country can start climbing out of the Great Cheney/Bush Recession.
Eschetic | Aug 18, 2012, 07:39 PM EDT
You've really almost got to feel sorry for Ryan. Almost. Here he tries to open a sympathetic commonality with a youth market (one of many where he is weak) and he gets hit by a well educated lyricist who knows whereof he speaks. Too many "conservatives" cling to the knee jerk common thought that we *have* to control our borders (no country ever DID before the Napoleonic Wars), but no one has actually submitted hard evidence that restrictions on Immigration have *ever* helped this country, most of which was physically built by immigrant labor and owes much of its research and development to their children. Most such restrictions since the 1920's have merely been blatant pandering to the lower classes by wealthy conservatives claiming that someone *else* is "taking" their jobs rather than the owners of the companies who have mismanaged them into economic slumps. ESPECIALLY in the last quarter century, poll after poll has demonstrated that the jobs "taken" by immigrants are precisely the jobs which are not *wanted* by those already here (but of course, those on the unthinking "right" think those less well of than they are should be *forced* to take those jobs, but that's another question). The better EDUCATED the voter, the less most right wing positions stand up to scrutiny - which is why MOST politicians of that stripe are more careful about not praising well educated bands, song writers and artists.
Seanmor | Aug 18, 2012, 07:27 PM EDT
alois: Not only could you NOT find employment and welfare benefiys in Ireland, even though your ancestors came from there, neither could I, although I was was raided in that country. I'm enormously PROUD of my close links with Ireland (the whole country) and I'm equally proud of having HONORABLY served in the U.S. Marine Corps- as an Irish citizen who was reqired to have in his possesion his green card at ALL times. Yes, the U.S. government has a duty to protect our nation's borders and to deport illigal aliens who flagrantly violate our laws.
BrianO | Aug 18, 2012, 07:16 PM EDT
And so ther is no mistake the top groups were of Hollaback, ephraimk, and such.
BrianO | Aug 18, 2012, 07:14 PM EDT
Seano are we going to compare music again, as that was such great fun last time. I believe the top groups were ABBA, John Denver, and Linda Rondstat. Personally Rage against the machine is over rated, but i might have mellowed in my old age, let me kick back with some Ramones, God rest Johnnies soul.
aloistmartin | Aug 18, 2012, 07:01 PM EDT
Crayola Crayons not those cheap Proletarian ones they sell at Walmart @?
aloistmartin | Aug 18, 2012, 07:00 PM EDT
Paul Ryan should be made to eat Crayons dipped in Tabasco Sauce !
aloistmartin | Aug 18, 2012, 06:02 PM EDT
No country can survive without controlling it's borders. My Great-Grandparents(both sides) were born in Ireland and I could not arrive in Ireland and get a job, sign up for social programs etc. It is insane to think that wanting to control who comes across our borders is rage!
seanomelb | Aug 18, 2012, 05:31 PM EDT
the GOP should stick with their country (or) western favorite's as the rest of the music world knows what frauds they are.
HorsesInMdstrm | Aug 18, 2012, 03:42 PM EDT
The post below beginning with No it isn't is not my post. The one above it is.
HorsesInMdstrm | Aug 18, 2012, 02:49 PM EDT
@BrianO - We did use to own the government, young fellow. Our votes used to count, when only people were people. Well, by cracky, I can remember a time when the government produced roads and national defense and kept elements of society from exerting too great a negative influence on the lives of others. I learned that stuff in civics class, but who needs that, when we have to pass the math and English tests so that the school doesn't lose funding. You probably had civics in school, eh?
HorsesInMdstrm | Aug 18, 2012, 01:52 PM EDT
No it isn't. But it is interesting your want an overseer. They had overseers on the plantations. You all complain about wall street but you support QE1, QE2, and lobby for QE3.
pilib04 | Aug 18, 2012, 01:47 PM EDT
Don't forget Reagan's passion for Bruce Springstein's "Born in the USA." Bruce was quick to point out the oxymoron. I suppose Zach de la Rocha could point it out to Ryan.
McNamara31 | Aug 18, 2012, 12:10 PM EDT
BrianO It was Governments job to oversee the pre 2008 leverage ratio's happening on Wall St rather than enable them with crony deregulation as was done within the Bush White House.
BrianO | Aug 18, 2012, 11:40 AM EDT
@horses, we all should own the government since all moneys used by goverbment, 100%, comes from the income producers. Government produces 0%, they are a necessary tool for a limited amount of tasks.
JimmyJK | Aug 18, 2012, 11:33 AM EDT
THIS IS SO HILARIOUS BECAUSE IT HAS OCCURRED 3 TIMES NOW - SEE BELOW 1. Chris Christie - R Governor of New Jersey. Loves Bruce Springsteen but Bruce can't stand him because his political actions are in direct opposition to the strong content of most of Bruce's songs 2. Jeff Fitzgerald - Republican senate candidate.... He used Dropkick Murphy's song "shipping up to Boston" despite being a candidate from Wisconsin. The Dropkick's were furious as Fitzgerald is a crony of Gov. Walker who is extremely anti-union and the Dropkick's are very pro-union especially the AFL - CIO. 3. Paul Ryan - Republican VP candidate - I'm mean really... WOW. His next favorite band must be Slayer (they do rock pretty hard). The contradictions are endless. Has he listened to the lyrics of a single song of Rage Against the Machine? This could be a comedy sketch.... And Paul Ryans three favorite bands: Rage Against the Machine, Slayer and the Grateful Dead.... huh
HorsesInMdstrm | Aug 18, 2012, 11:25 AM EDT
@BrianO - You ask an interesting question. Since corporations own the government since the Citizens United decision, your question is interesting because neither answer is distinct from the other. @Seanmor - glad you served HONORABLY. I did too. Because I was a mere clerk, I had to know how to type. Obviously you did more than in the way of warcraft than I did, since you did not have that opportunity.
BrianO | Aug 18, 2012, 11:04 AM EDT
What interests do you serve, the government interest? which is more powerful and has greater means to force you into conditions you may not wish to be in the government or a corporation?
McNamara31 | Aug 18, 2012, 10:43 AM EDT
Seanmor As a daughter of Irish immigrants, who's father and brother also served in this country's military, and I am married to an ex Marine; we know about service. However it's not what the "leftist" media thinks about Paul Ryan it's what the facts show about Paul Ryan, and that is he serves "one cause" that of greed and the corporate interests. Are you not aware that the Catholic Bishops have called Ryan's policies immoral? Ryan benefited from all this country had to offer, and since he has been in office time and time again have tried to deliver middle class savings to Wall St.and the Insurance industry. First with trying to privatize Social Security under Bush, and now with trying to replace Medicare with a voucher program. Ryan's a pure political operative and his thinking will devastate the middle class.

I'm sure rage against the machine is a nonprofit organization who does concerts for free to all people, What that they get paid to play music, they charge an admission fee to concerts, they accumulate wealth, throw them in prison.
GregShox | Aug 18, 2012, 09:35 AM EDT
Brilliant. That Rolling Stone piece is one of the funniest things I've read this week.
Seanmor | Aug 18, 2012, 08:44 AM EDT
What the pro-abortion media calls Ryan's "rage against women" is his opposition to the maiming, mangling, mutilatind, dismembering, disempoweling, decapitating of unbron babies. As for his "rage against immigratns", I know that Ryan and all other politicians who disagree with rewarding illegal alines for violating U.S laws are not the least bit angry against me or any other immigrant who came here in full compliance with law and HONORABLY served in the U.S. defnse forces, which in my case was 4 years in the Marine Corps. Despite what the leftist media would have us believe, Ryan is neith anti-woaan nor anti-legal immigrant.
