Parents of the an 11-year-old girl who died by hanging in her Belfast home last Friday have said their daughter did not mean to kill herself and only wanted to frighten them.

Ciara’s mother, Mary Cunningham discovered her body in the shower, at the family home in Mount Eagles Park estate, on Friday, according to the Irish Sun newspaper.

A statement released by the Cunningham family said Ciara was “a very loving daughter and a happy child.”

“This was an accident because she did not mean to take her own life. Our family has been left devastated and numb beyond belief by what has happened. We cannot fully understand this tragic loss of our lovely and beautiful young girl.”

Father John Forsythe, a local priest, said that claims made on Facebook that Ciara had been bullied were untrue. He said her death was cause by a dangerous prank that went tragically wrong.

He said “She wanted to hit out at her parents and it just went so badly wrong. That’s how she ended up doing this to herself…This young girl did not want to die…She came from a hard-working loving family who were excellent parents and loved her dearly.”

My heart goes out to her family and friends, particuarly her parents. I cannot imagine their pain and the permanent picture now etched in their minds. Today's world can be a very sad place for our youth, whether they are bullied or not. Which child hasn't thought, "I'll fix them, they'll be sorry"? I know, I certainly did as a child and that was many years ago. Most of us, however, do not act on that thought. At age 11, I doubt very much a child can actually think this through, realizing that such an act is "forver." There are exceptions, of course...those children brought up in abusive households, etc., who would do anything to escape the pain...but this doesn't seem to be the case in this instance. My condolences to the family...may you one day find peace.
Death by misadventure...It can happen.Either way..Parents must be devastated.Guilt must be awful.
Extremely disturbing!
If she took her own life, it's suicide
This is a very sad story, but I believe that a child can take their own life no matter how hard working or loving the family are.
How would an eleven year old child discover you could kill yourself by hanging?Saw it on tv?Was told by someone older?Sad story and a tragic loss for the family.
