Paddy Powers tips Mitt Romney to win GOP nomination

Newt Gingrich now seen as a “long shot” by Irish bookmakers

Europe’s largest odds-makers, bookmakers Paddy Power, believe Mitt Romney has done enough to solidify his claim of the GOP nominee in the 2012 presidential race.

Paddy Power moved Romney from 1-8 favorite to win to 1-10. Rick Santorum’s odds dropped from 6-1 to 10-1, Ron Paul remains at 25-1 and Newt Gingrich is the long shot at 33-1.

On Wednesday a spokesperson for Paddy Power said “Romney continues to edge in front of his rivals but is yet to land a knockout blow. Santorum certainly faces an uphill task if he is to win the nomination, but I wouldn’t rule him out just yet.”

Intrade gave Romney a 89.2percent chance of winning the Republican presidential nomination having won six states from Alaska to Vermont on Super Tuesday. They also give Santorum a 3.8percent chance of winning the GOP nomination, followed by Newt Gingrich 2.3percent and Ron Paul is given a 1.2percent chance.

Paddy Power is also giving odds on Sarah Palin joining the presidential race. On Tuesday night the former vice presidential nominee said she wouldn’t rule anything out.
