Victim’s son confronted Deputy First Minister over killing

Twenty nine years after he was killed by the IRA, Private Patrick Kelly will be awarded posthumous military honors at a ceremony next week, when Irish Minister for Justice and Defense Alan Shatter presents the Military Star medal to his son in a special ceremony at Athlone barracks.

Private Kelly, 35, was killed alongside trainee Irish policeman Gary Sheehan during a joint Defence Forces and Garda operation to rescue the kidnapped businessman Don Tidey, who was held captive by the IRA.

Kelly was killed in an ambush on personnel searching for the kidnappers in Ballinamore, County Leitrim in 1983. No one has ever been convicted over his death. Tidey was eventually released unharmed.

According to the Journal, The Military Star is given posthumously to members of the Defence Forces who were 'killed or fatally wounded as a direct result of a hostile action outside the state or overseas.'

However, the Irish government appears to be acting on a recent report that recommended the medal be extended to those who have been killed inside Ireland too.

Last year Private Kelly's eldest son David, who will reportedly accept a framed citation from the Justice Minister as his brother Corporal Andrew Kelly receives the medal, confronted the North's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness whilst he was on the campaign trail.

Kelly accused the Sinn Fein deputy president of having been a member of the IRA Army Council at the time of his father’s killing. McGuinness denied the allegations and denied knowing the names of those responsible for the killing.

Maze prison escapee Brendan 'Bik' McFarlane was acquitted in the Special Criminal Court in 2008 of falsely imprisoning Tidey during the kidnapping.

The deputy first minister has blood on his hands for up to 30 murders and yet he continues to deny it. Both the British and Irish Governments have created this fake 'Assembly' in a bid to create peace, but it's all happened too quick, there is no fairness and too many murderers, not terrorists have been let out of jail free, The deputy first minister is a disgrace and not fit to hold political office.
Don Tyidy who was chained to a tree and kept in squalor by the IRA for 23 days was present when Paddy Kelly's four sons were prsented with the Military Star. Andrew Kelly was only 11 weeks old when his father and Garda Garry Sheehan were murdered by the IRA. Andrew is now a respected Member of the Irish Miliary Police. Don Tidey sent the boys gifts every Christmas in gratitude. It is a lovely recognition for a man who did his duty to the Irish State and did it so bravely unlike the cowards who hide behind balaclavas and want to rule by the gun.
aloistmartin. Once again you are talking like a IRA/SINN FEIN PROVO, COMMUNIST OR MARXIST. What the IRA think of Paddy Kelly or the Gardai is of no importance to ordinary Irish people. The rest of your comment does not make sense. If the people of the Irish Republic don't want a United Ireland then people like you will have to accept it. In most people's eyes the IRA are the betrayers, shaming us at home and abroad. Their thuggery and criminality disgusts us. That is not the way to unite Ireland and the Loyalists are no better. WHY WOULD THE REPUBLIC WANT TO UNITE WITH THE NORTH WHEN THEY CAN'T GET ON WITH EACH OTHER. One Civil War is enough.
aloistmartin - verbal diarrhoea no substitute for informed argument...
Leahkinsella@ Ireland`s (Bourgeois Capitalist/Free State) Government, has made common usurage of milksop Diplomatic pandering, in an effort to Secure and Consolidate, Their own Socioculturally Infilial, Elitist Class, at the expense of the greater Irish Republican cause. These shameless Betrayers will stoop to any level of Indolence ! Scapegoat the Revolutionary Cause( I.R.A.), Justify the Occupation and Partition of the the North ! Once Again; Can Re-Unification be but one Media fiasco Love Fest away ? Paddy Kelly was no better than a Traitor in the eye`s of the I.R.A. and "The Garda" are no better than Capitalist "Strike Buster" mercenaries !
aloistmartin. What a at upid comment. What on earth are you talking about. Explain.
Aloisrmartin. what on earth are you talking about?
Yet another Bourgeois Symbol of Republican Gentrification. Can Re-Unification be only one good Tear Jerk away @?..!
I,m so glad to see that Private Paddy Kelly has at last been honoured as I remember his death well and the kidnapping of Don Tidey. Private Kelly gave his life protecting the citizens of the Irish State from the treachery and criminality of Sinn Fein/IRA. Let us not forget who the real heroes were, the Gardai (Irish Police) and Irish Army as well as the ordinary people and how sordid the villians were, these supposed republicans were. They may have long ago laundered their ill-gotten gains, but no amount of spin will launder their grubby reputation. The victims of the "Peace Process" are still suffering while their killers are seemingly honoured. If this is their idea of peace, may God protect us from it, it's garbage. David Kelly deserves a medal for publicly calling McGuinness a murderer. Both sides in Northern Ireland are pathetic, look at the way they behaved on July 12th! No wonder the Irish Republic does not want a United Ireland. It doesn't matter what religeon or political belief you have in the Irish Republic, people are better educated now and don't believe there is a ghost in the sky. It's time the people in the North grew up.
